One of a series to fill in the gaps between Downtown caches. Parking is scarce or prohibited near most of these caches.  If you find a good parking spot, take it and do this series as an "urban hike."

Magnetic bison tube.

Ft. Moore

On this site, the American Flag was flown over Los Angeles on July 4, 1847--the first American Independence Day in Los Angeles.  The fort was erected by members of the Mormon Battalion shortly before their release from active duty.  They had marched 1900 miles from Iowa to San Diego and then to Los Angeles as part of Army of the est.  Some of the discharged veterans were present at the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill, starting the California gold rush.

The Fort Moore Pioneer Memorial is a large stone memorial wall built in 1957 on part of the fort's original location facing Hill Street. As the largest bas-relief military monument in the United States, it honors the Mormon Battalion, the U.S. 1st Dragoons, and the New York Volunteers who raised the American flag over the fort on July 4, 1847, at the first Independence Day in Los Angeles.

We've driven by here tons of times but have never stopped. Thanks for the history lesson and the hide. There were surprisingly many people climbing up the stairs today... we met a nice Mormon tourist family who came here specifically to see the monument. (#1193)

Making the downtown pilgrmage with Flaglady for some urban caching before and after the event. Appreciated those white curbs for passenger unloading but it put the pressure on us to find caches within 5 minutes or risk the heavy the hand of the law. Overall a new experience for us. Thanks for the local history lesson along with the hide.
