Geocache Description:

This cache is placed near one of the oldest psychiatrical/historical hospitals in norway. Be wary of muggles passing by. There is a tram stop right around the corner.

In the year 1290, at the time Duke Haakon V Magnusson (later king of Norway) ruled eastern Norway from the royal palace in the Old Town and Oslo had barely 3,000 inhabitants, a group of Franciscan monks began construction of a monastery in the shadow of the Ekeberg hill. It was the start of the Oslo Hospital, today the country's oldest psychiatric hospital. Free from worldly goods to the so-called beggar monks meet people who suffered with true love and care. In the abbey church they challenged the religious customs of their time by making room for the "sick, mentally ill and poor" (For siege, saare og fattige) in the church. A measure that created controversy and opposition, not least from the Bishop of Oslo. Franciscan strong social commitment reached the ear of the Pope in Rome. In 1291 he wrote a letter to the King of Norway, with a message that the little monastery in Oslo shall continue its operations under the Pope's special protection, represented by the King. Free of resistance the monks continue their spiritual and humanitarian work among the capital's disadvantaged. In connection with the Reformation the King took Franciscan property. As the capital needed a new hospital, the property was converted in 1538 to the foundation Oslo Hospital and was appointed to the city's main hospital. In 1736, a young girl, Birte Jonsdotter, exonerated from the death sentence for the murder of her employers's kids. She was considered "afsindig" (out of mind) and got a life sentece in the asylum at Oslo Hospital. Oslo Hospital has a central place in the Norwegian psychiatry. In 1846 the former physician at the hospital Herman Wedel Major wrote the insane draft law; a reform of the then psychiatric treatment. Madman Act of 1848 is considered today as the foundation for the modern Norwegian psychiatry. (Translated from http://www.oslo-hospital.no )
