This is our 5th consecutive year participating in the Ohio Department of Transportation's Adopt-A-Highway Program as a NWOGEO and Groundspeak CITO Event.

WHO/WHAT/WHERE:

Northwest Ohio Geocachers are the proud adoptors of a two mile section of US-24/River Road, west of Waterville near Grand Rapids, with a portion of our section bordering Providence Metropark.

Our obligation is to pick up litter four times a year along our adopted highway section.  In return, ODOT has posted nice free advertising for us on signs (see image above), at each each end of our adopted section.

Coordinates of our sign at the north eastern end of our highway section:  N 41º 25.974'    W 083º 49.871'

Coordinates of our sign at the south western end of our highway section:  N 41º25.029'    W 083º51.446'

ODOT will also post orange "SHOULDER WORK AHEAD" signs at each end of our section for each of our clean-up events.

We are responsible for picking up litter between the berm of the road and the utility pole line.

In the past, with plenty of volunteers, these CITOs took barely an hour to complete.

These CITO events are actually a good time, as we also usually find a place to grab lunch and socialize plus hunt caches after our events.

Click here to see photos of previous events.

We meet at the American Legion Post 232 parking lot (12580 River Rd. at Yawburg Rd.), at the coordinates at the top of this page, to coordinate our event, and to hold a "tailgate" safety briefing.  Being close to the middle of our adopted section, this is a good base of operations with safe and ample parking.

If you can not, or do not feel like walking and picking up litter, we can always use a driver to shuttle people, as well as water and other supplies.

We split into groups of two to four and work facing traffic. Depending on the number of volunteers, we start in the middle and work to the ends, and then return on the opposite side, or start in the middle and at the ends with someone helping to shuttle.

Please note that children under the age of 12 are NOT permitted to participate in the Adopt-A-Highway program according to the State of Ohio. For participants aged 12 through 17, a parent or guardian must complete a consent and release form, to be bought to the event.

Download the Parent/Guardian Consent and Release Form.

Each adult participant will have to sign a group release form which should be available at the event. (This requirement will be elaborated on before the event, after NWOGEO attends a A-A-H refresher course along with a Meth Lab awareness presentation. Please add this event to your "Watch List" so that you will be notified of any requirement changes.)

WHAT TO BRING:

ODOT supplies flourescent colored safety vests that everyone must wear during cleanup. Alternatively you may wear our Safety Green NWOGEO T-Shirt or bring your own Safety vest.

While ODOT provides trash bags, some of us bring extra bags just in case.

While not necessary, a 5 or 7 gallon plastic bucket is a lot easier to carry the bags in. Many of us also bring along "grabbers" to avoid bending over and touching the litter.

Economy models are only around ten bucks...

and more deluxe models about twice as much.

Wear bright colored clothes, sturdy shoes and bring gloves in case there are some dangerous items along the way (eg. broken glass and uhh, containers filled with a certain disgusting liquid.) Some of us also bring along Latex gloves to wear under our work gloves.

You may also want to bring insect repellant with at least 20% DEET or 15% Picaridin, as we have had a few tick incidents. (Click here for more tick and repellant information) Sunscreen is also a good idea, as well as a hat if you are inclined to need one.

If you have FRS/GMRS radios, bring 'em along, and set them to channel 2. Also don't forget to bring your cell phone, and exchange numbers with any of our volunteer "shuttle" drivers.

WHAT NOT TO BRING:

Do not wear headsets that could interfere with your hearing. Do not wear sandals or thongs.

WHY:

This is one way of giving back to the community as well as making a good name for our group and geocaching. So let’s have lots of people out there, do it quickly, and have fun in the process!

Please be aware that by participating in this cache event, you are agreeing to the guidelines and liability limitations as described by the disclaimer that can be found on this and all other cache pages. Additionally, you agree and understand that you are  participating on your own, and that NWOGEO has no insurance or liability in the unlikely event of a mishap. Children 12 and over are welcome and often attend, however parents must use their discretion concerning how their children participate and must present a release form for them at the event.

Any questions may be posted here as a note in the logs, or on our website below, and someone will answer them.

Hope to see you there!
