Bug Light, also known as Portland Breakwater Light, was first
built in 1855 as a wooden structure, but the breakwater was
extended and a new lighthouse was constructed at the end of it in
1875. The new lighthouse was made of curved cast-iron plates whose
seams are disguised by six decorative Corinthian columns. Its
design was inspired by the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in
Athens.
During World War II, the breakwater slowly receded, as the New
England Shipbuilding Corporation built two shipyards next to the
lighthouse. These shipyards produced Liberty Ships for the war
effort. Because of the smaller breakwater, there was a lesser need
for the lighthouse and it was subsequently was abandoned in 1943.
It was fully restored in 1989 and was reactivated in 2002. Today a
park named after the lighthouse, Bug Light Park, allows visitors to
view the Portland Breakwater Light up close, while memorializing
the shipbuilding efforts of World War II.
Now to the cache! You are looking for a small, magnetic, well
camouflaged lock n' lock container. Please replace as found.
Although not too busy on cooler days, this area can be pretty busy
with muggles during the warmer tourist season. Please use stealth!
Parking is nearby. Have fun!
Please Note- It appears someone has placed a Gladware
container near our cache. Our cache is not the one with the blue
lid. To log our cache, you must find and sign the log in our cache,
which is a small, round, camoflaged lock n' lock. The other
container contains a logbook with the word "Dead Beat" on the log,
and invites finders to share their thoughts. Feel free to do so,
but remember you need to find ours to count it as a smiley for "Bug
Light".
