Richard III Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

muchado: A little later than scheduled, but it's time for "Dick 3" to retire. It has served well. By the way, the tower in question was the "Bloody Tower" which is also known as the "Garden Tower".

Geocache Description:

A very short walk with a little bushwhacking near the site of a 19th century prison. The coordinates are not those of the cache - they point to the middle of 3rd Street in Bedford, NH.

This cache is inspired by Shakespeare's history Richard The Third. A synopsis of the play as well as the full text can be found here. There are several film versions - a funky one with Ian McKellan and a traditional one with Laurence Olivier.

Like all the Shakespeare caches, you don't need to read the play or see the movie to find this cache. You will, however, need to do some research on the web to get the final coordinates.

"Now is the winter of our discontent Made glorious summer by this son of York;"
(Act I, Scene I)

With an opening line like that, it reminded me that with summer coming quickly, it was time to place another cache. This is my favorite Shakespeare play. I've seen it many times, but my absolute favorite production was the finale of the Wars of the Roses series performed by the English Shakespeare Company during their 1988 world tour. Seven of Shakepeare's histories - 21+ hours - performed in a single weekend!

The Puzzle

In the play, Richard has several people imprisoned and once imprisoned, has them murdered. His two youngest victims were his two nephews, Edward V of England and Richard of Shrewsbury. In order to solve this puzzle, you'll have to find the exact location (in degrees, minutes, and seconds) of the cell where the princes were imprisoned and murdered. You will find no further information in the play that will help solve this puzzle. You'll need to do some research.

The coordinates of the prison cell are North AB° CD' EF" West GHI° JK' LM".

The final coordinates for the cache are North 42° 5M.MDJ West 071° CB.FBF.

[Historically, there is no proof that Richard actually had these two murdered or that they were, in fact, murdered. They simply, and conveniently for Richard, disappeared. There is also no historical evidence that they were imprisoned at this exact location, but traditionally, this is the location of their cell.]

Please Note

  • I used Google Earth to get the coordinates of the cell. Other tools may give slightly different results. If you cannot use Google Earth and you can describe the exact location of the cell, I'll gladly give you the coordinates that I used.
  • The cache a short walk from parking, but does require a small amount of bushwhacking.
  • The cache is a 6 cup lock & lock container.
  • This cache will be hard to find with more than a few inches of snow on the ground - the winter of our discontent.
  • This cache was published at the Bread & Roses II Geo-Event - made glorious summer by this angevine and NotThePainter.
