０系新幹線がここにはあります。
1964年から1986年まで総計3,000両以上が製造されました。
世界ではじめて200km/hを超える営業運転を達成した車両でもあります。
1991年春、昭島市は新幹線車両を図書館に活用することを決め、ＪＲ東海から1991年秋に廃車された同車を購入、翌年３月に昭島市に運ばれた。その際、ＪＲのロゴ（晩年は車号脇にオレンジ色で小さいＪＲロゴがあった）は除去された。車内には座席を撤去して書架が設置されたが、一部座席は閲覧用として残した。座席は簡易リクライニング式、大きな机もあることから閲覧に適している。空調には家庭用クーラーが取り付けられた。
