In the last 100 years, 7 million girls and women have enjoyed the fun that Guiding as to offer in: Sparks, Brownies, Guides, Pathfinders, Rangers, Jr. Leaders, Trex, Lones, Link, Trefoil Guild or adult leadership. 2013 marks the 100th anniversary of Girl Guides in Alberta. In the three-year period from 2010-2013, we are establishing the Sisters for a Century series of geocaches in as many cities or towns with Guiding units as we can. We hope you enjoy these easy caches as much as the girls and Guiders have enjoyed learning about geocaching and setting them up for you.

Guiding in Lethbridge

Guiding in Lethbridge started in 1921 with the 1st Lethbridge Brownie Pack and 1st Lethbridge Girl Guide Company. The 1st Lethbridge Ranger Unit was formed in 1966 composed of Guides from the 1st and 4th Lethbridge Guide Companies. The 3rd Lethbridge Pathfinder Unit was started in the fall of 1979 when the new age groupings were instituted, with Sparks starting in Lethbridge in 1988 when the new age grouping for our youngest members was formed. We are extremely proud that our very own Chris Burton from Lethbridge became Chief Commissioner 2009-2012. Guiding teaches girls about science, nature, hiking, camping, outdoor and indoor cooking, first aid, technology, community service and how to make wise use of their resources. Camping is a very important part of the Guiding experience because of the fun and adventure. The first Brownie camp was held in 1933 at Burmis. Later permanent camps were established at Burmis and Peaceful Valley. After decades of fun, Camp Okeekun Girl Guide camp was established at Fort McLeod in 1969 and is still running today. Girls have the opportunity for wonderful travel experiences across the province and around the world. Lethbridge offers programs for Sparks (age 5-6), Brownies (aged 7-8), Guides (aged 9-11), Pathfinders (aged 12-14), Rangers (aged 15-17), Lones (all ages), Link (age 18-30), and Trefoil Guild (age 30+). Each year, girls of all ages celebrate Thinking Day on February 22, the birthday of the co-founders Lord and Lady Baden-Powell. Chinook Area welcomes baby girls born the week of Thinking Day with a teddy bear and one year free membership when the girl is of age. Guiding in Lethbridge is alive and strong with committed leaders and girls ready for a challenge and good times! We have a lot of fun...why not join us! "Girl Greatness Starts Here!"
