This cache is on the Farland Point walk not far from the attractive red sandstone University Marine Biological Station building which opened in 1896. Port Loy, which is nearby, is the original site of a barge named the ‘Ark’.
The ‘Ark’ was a floating marine laboratory which was used to analyse findings from the famous 130,000 km ‘Challenger Expedition’ (1873-76). Over 4000 previously unknown species were catalogued following the expedition. In 1900 the 'Ark' was washed away in a storm.
The Robertson Museum and Aquarium, within the Marine Station, are open to visitors for a nominal charge (weekdays only). You can see a reconstruction of part of the original ‘Ark’ and some of the beautiful and varied sealife from the local area.
When finding this cache please note: it’s a windy spot, so hang on tight to the log while you sign it, and bring your own pencil!
