Finally got to Catalina for this virtual. This is a favorite spot
of mine and I wanted to share it.
The coordinates take you to a wall where you can view the Avalon
underwater park.
THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE POSTED COORDINATES.
From the posted coordinates the cache is approximately 100 feet
straight out in about 40 feet of water depending on the tide.
The cache is a plaque placed in Captain Jacques Yves
Cousteau’s honor in 1997 by the California diving community.
To claim this cache, e-mail me with the answer to these
questions:
You must make a current dive to the plaque.
No exceptions.
1. What did this legend give us?
2. Who was your dive buddy.
3. Date of your dive.
No solo dives allowed on this one.Where is the fun in that anyway?
This spot is perhaps the single most popular dive site on the west
coast of North America. The then owners of Catalina Divers Supply
established the underwater park in 1962.
All within the park boundaries you’ll find wrecks,
kelp,ledges,drop-offs and walls. It is a great place for a night
dive. Usually the visibility is around 30 to 60 feet.
Unfortunately, when my buddy Max and I dove, it was only 10 to 15
feet and it took us two dives to find the plaque. On a good day you
might be able to see it from the surface snorkeling, but you will
not be able to answer the required question unless you are scuba
diving.
Post your dive profile along with your log for all to see.My
profile for the day was:
Dive #1 75 feet for 38 minutes. Swam out to the wreck of the
Sue-Jac. Worked our way back up to the shallows, missing the plaque
due to poor visibility. Water temp. 61 degrees Surface interval
1:58 minutes.
Dive #2 58 feet for 36 minutes.Finally spotted the plaque in 40
feet of water, poor vis. water temp. 61 degrees.
A couple of years ago stairs were put in to make entries and
exits easier. Many classes use the park for their certification
dives. Now it’s just like the 405 fwy during rush hour!My
buddy Max and I opted to go in and out the old school way, Over the
rocks and thru the kelp.Have fun and be safe.

October 31, 2009 by badfeet (3363 found) What a gtreat way to spend Halloween. We were on Catalina with the Channel Islands dive club. My wife and I spent the first dive looking for it without asking for directions and came up with no joy. Between dives we asked where it was and armed with that info we made a second dive with our new friend Dianne and found it pretty much straight away
