Geocache Description:

Our troop's first geocache hide!

This geocache was placed to commemorate a hike up to Mt. Baden-Powell in May 2010 where we encountered too much snow to safely continue. The Boy Scouts of America wants Scouts to use good sound judgment and turn back or take an escape route to eliminate possible danger to the participants. After encountering nearly knee-deep snow on our ascent, we turned around and took an alternate hike down Vincent Gulch to meet up with the Prairie Fork of the San Gabriel River to rest and have lunch. Along the trail, we enjoyed wonderful views of a snowcapped Mount San Antonio (Old Baldy) to the southeast. Some of our Scouts got their first glimpse of Manzanita - some were bushes and others were the size of small trees. They have smooth, reddish bark and stiff, twisting branches. The word "Manzanita" comes from Spanish, meaning "little apple" and refers to the little berries it provides. We also got to smell the bark of some Jeffrey Pine trees – some boys said it reminded them of vanilla, while others thought it smelled like lemon and still others detected no scent at all.

Because we hid this cache on the way back down the mountain, it's a fairly short hike from the parking area at Vincent Gap. Be sure to place your National Forest Adventure Pass in plain sight.

As this was the Scouts' very first cache, it may not be as cleverly hidden as others. But we intend to adjust its hiding place in the near future to correct that, and of course, we'll update its coordinates at that time.

Watch for muggles, as this cache is fairly close to the trail.
