Geocache Description:

This cache is a short distance from where you can park your car. Most of the road to the cache is smooth and paved, but the last 1/2 km. is rough and gravel.

On October 12, 1944 a Glen Martin B-26 Marauder from the U.S.A.A.F. 17th Bomb Group plunged out of the sky for reasons unknown and crashed at this location, killing all six crew members aboard. During the years that followed, virtually all of the airplane was removed, piece-by-piece, to be recycled into pots, pans, fireplace tools, silk blouses, and a variety of other items which were in short supply during this period. Eventually the vegetation returned and there are now no signs of the crash. But in 1996, some 52 years after the event, efforts were made to relocate the area and place a small memorial to the crew members who lost their lives on that fateful day. This small memorial is the virtual cache you will be searching for. There are several small, winding roads in the area. You will want to eventually find yourself at the following coordinates - N42 44.386 E011 28.330. From there it will be necessary to leave the paved road for about 1/2 km. With adequate ground clearance you can drive to a parking location very close to the cache. Otherwise, it will only take you 10 minutes or less to walk to the area from here. Please remain on the gravel road - It will not be necessary to enter the woods until you are within 50m of the cache. When you find the site, please give a moment of silence and, if you can, place a small flower on the memorial to honor the memory of the six young crewmen who perished here. Also, to verify your find please email me the name of the 5th crew member listed on the memorial. Non-authenticated finds will be removed from this page. Thanks!

8/19/16 NOTE: I'VE BEEN TOLD THERE IS A CHAIN ACROSS THE ROAD LEADING TO THE CACHE, ALONG WITH A SIGN STATING THAT UNAUTHORIZED ENTRY IS PROHIBITED. THE PEOPLE WHO INFORMED ME OF THIS WENT AROUND THE CHAIN ANYWAY AND HAD NO PROBLEMS. PLEASE PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK WHILE I INVESTIGATE THIS FURTHER!
8/31/16 NOTE: CONVERSATIONS WITH PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THE AREA INDICATE THAT THIS IS ALL "PUBLIC LAND" AND ACCESS CANNOT BE RESTRICTED. AS SUCH, PLEASE PARK AT THE CHAIN AND WALK TO THE CACHE FROM THERE - ABOUT SIX MINUTES. LET ME KNOW IF YOU ENCOUNTER ANY DIFFICULTIES AND, IF POSSIBLE, SEND ME A PICTURE OF THE SIGN.
