A cache placed to remember a local shipwreck and those who lost
their lives.
On April 1st, 1855, the Sloop Fair Lady set sail from Providence
for a trip down to Charleston, SC. The sloop was barely halfway
down the bay when a strong Nor'easter blew in. The boat was hit by
20' waves and hurricane strength gusts.
Captain Walter Christian and his crew tried valiantly to bring
the Fair Lady into the harbor at Newport, but the storm proved too
much for them. Shortly after 8pm, the ship struck some rocks off
the northeast shore of Jamestown.
The ship quickly broke up in the heavy seas and strong winds.
The crew and passengers tried to swim to shore, all but one
succumbed and drowned in the frigid water. First Mate Philip Evers
barely made it to shore, exhausted and near death.
He was found unconscious the next morning by local fishermen and
rushed to the local doctor. He remained in a coma for over a week.
When he came to, he was able to tell the sad tale of the Sloop Fair
Lady and the souls lost at sea that night.
This cache was placed to remember the twelve lives lost on the
Fair Lady, 150 years ago. The sloop hit the rocks just off-shore
from the cache location.
The cache should be a fairly easy find. Since this is my first
cache, I hope I have done everything right. As of 3/13/06, made
hide quite obvious to the cachers eye! Please keep it that way for
the next searcher! Thanks.
