Take the road which goes to St Bernard’s Peak Hotel from the R617 between Underberg and Kokstad (approx x km from Underberg and 60km from Kokstad) in the southern Berg region.
Parking is available at St Bernard’s Peak Hotel which is approximately 30km from the R617 (S 30.03.370 E 029.06.458, altitude 1779m), but please speak to the receptionist at the hotel.
This cache is approximately 10km away ( i.e. 20km round trip), so allow a full day and take a picnic and plenty to drink as there is no water, plus the gear you would take on any trip into the mountains - sun protection, and clothes for cold or windy or wet weather.
Behind the hotel take the red road heading uphill which becomes a path. As you climb keep taking the path heading uphill when you come to any forks.
Do take a little detour off the path to look into the cave and mushroom rocks at S 30.03.679 E 029.05.585. At this stage you are nearly at the top.
Reaching the top, keep on the path until you intersect with a jeep track at S 30.03.638 E 029.05.448 (altitude 2171m). There is a small cairn at this point, so find a stone to add to it.
Now turn right along the jeep track. You will walk along the ridge which forms the border between KZN and Eastern Cape, and can see over into the Transkei. From here follow the jeep track or paths that provide short cuts across bends in the track.
After a while you’ll see The Pig marking your destination. There is great scenery especially as you get closer to the cache. Stop at S 30.00.983 E 029.03.049 to see the steep view down into the valley framed by cliff faces.
Once you’ve found the cache take time to explore the right-hand side of The Pig (facing it) where there is a series of caves (one with a natural window with a superb view) and Bushman paintings.
(At the beginning of your walk you could take a detour to find the cache at Waterfall Cave – Bushman paintings, and at the top of the climb at Transkei View Cave.)
