Geocache Description:

First State Challenge 2009 - Millsboro - Hidden by Beezele

The 2009 First State Challenge sponsored by Delaware Geocachers ended in mid May. There were 17 new caches spread across the state of Delaware by volunteer cachers to give you an appreciation for the great areas of the First State. Over 90 cachers representing 5 states completed the challenge. Although the challenge is finished, the individual caches are still available to be found.

Millsboro- Mill Wheel

History

Millsboro is situated at the first point on the Indian River narrow enough to allow for the construction of an earthen dam and bridge used in the Late 18th Century. Thus the town generally sets the date for its establishment as 1792. In fact, there had been a thriving rural farming community in existence in the area for more than a century by that date.

Fifteen grist and saw mills existed within a four-mile radius of Millsboro in the Early 19th Century. Augmented by other industries, prominent among which was a tannery, a thriving business in the shipment of hand-hewn cypress shingles, and an iron furnace and foundry. The foundry and forge, which operated until after the Civil War, were located at what is now known as Cupola Park.
