Description: The Kilburn dam is lower reservoir for the
Drakensberg
Pumped storage Scheme. The capacity of the dam is 35 000 m³.
The
wall was constructed from material (Soil and rock) from the
excavation of the power station cavities. The purpose of the dam
is
two fold. One is a reservoir in the transfer process of the
Thugela/Vaal Scheme. The other purpose of the dam is the
lower
reservoir for the pumped storage scheme for Eskom Drakensberg
power
station. The water runs through the turbines and is captured in
the
Kilburn dam to be pumped back over the mountain during low
demand
times.
