This is the fourth of a series on Robert Burns in the Stirling Area.
The first is Stirling’s Statues – GC1FY7V The second is Black Russel – GC1GB4B The third is Robert Burns and Harvieston GC1GJ4H This series is planned for the “Year of the Homecoming 2009” which centres on the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns’ birth. In 1787, on Robert Burns Highland Tour he stayed at The Stirling Arms Hotel, Dunblane. This was built in the 18th century and would have been a new build at the time of his stay. Burns picked up the chorus of “My Harry was a Gallant Gay” from an old woman in Dunblane and added the verses. This tune is connected to the gallant 42nd regiment or Black Watch. Dunblane also has a further connection with Burns and his excise duties. It is now an established fact that if Burns had lived until January 1797 he would have been promoted and in August of that year he would have become the Supervisor at Dunblane. His salary would have been handsome and Burns would have had more free time to devote to his writing and Dunblane would have been a real attraction on the Burns trail. Since the cache has been muggled twice I have changed the hiding place. It is only a few feet away from the original co-ords but the clue should prevent a long search and draw less attention to this cache.
