This cache is a Project APE cache, a cache hidden with permission for the Planet of the Apes Promotion in 2001. Moun10Bike and Jeremy were the original covert placers of the cache, but Moun10Bike has since taken over complete ownership. When the cache was placed, it contained a torch from the movie. The description in green below was the original description for the cache:

Project APE's success continues as our movement continues to grow beyond what we ever thought possible. For this mission we are heading back to the Northwest, where we are sure to keep our momentum going. Our confidence as a group is growing, but don't let our past success blind us to the constant threat we face. We still hear and receive daily reports of undercover federal agents stalking our team. Remain diligent and stay alert. Remember, anyone you don't know is a possible enemy to our mission.

Below is our field agent's report for the mission at hand:

"This mission is not going to be an easy one. The hike will not be as scenic as some of the other missions, but you'll be on a great adventure. You'll need to wear a good pair of waterproof boots, or an old pair of sneakers. A flashlight is necessary, even if you go during the day.

This is a creepy, historical and very cool spot. Be ready for a unique hike, but beware because in parts you'll be sitting ducks for the authorities. So move fast and keep a good eye on your back to make sure you're not tailed. Good luck!"

Cache Details:
This cache can be accessed using two primary routes starting from two separate tralheads: the Hyak Trailhead and the Annette Lake Trailhead. The coordinates for these trailheads are available in the additional waypoints below. I have posted detailed maps of the cache location that show these starting points along with the trails that lead from them to the cache ( JPEG [6.6 MB download] or PDF [6.5 MB download]). In addition, If you own a Garmin GPS, you can use my Northwest Trails custom mapset to load the details of each route to your receiver.
  • The John Wayne Pioneer Trail
This route begins from the Iron Horse Trailhead at Hyak, which is accessed off of Exit 54 on Interstate 90. The trailhead is an expansive parking lot operated by the State Parks with restroom facilities. No parking permit is required. This trailhead is the major access point for the 2-1/4 mile long Snoqualmie Tunnel, the feature for which the cache is named and through which you must travel to access the cache. Please note that the tunnel is closed each year between roughly Nov. 1 and May 1 due to the dangerous icicles that form inside from seep water. You can learn the status of the tunnel by calling (509) 656-2230.

    Round-Trip Distance: About 6 miles (10 k)
    Elevation Gain: Minimal

UPDATE Jan. 31, 2009: The Snoqualmie Tunnel is closed until further notice due to deteriorating conditions within. DO NOT use the tunnel to access the cache until the tunnel is officially reopened.
  • The Annette Lake Trail
If the Snoqualmie Tunnel is closed, then this is your best access point for the cache. The Annette Lake Trailhead is located near the Asahel Curtis Picnic Area off of Interstate 90 at Exit 47. Follow the Annette Lake Trail up to the Iron Horse Trail (old railroad grade), then follow that trail east to the cache. Note that a Northwest Forest Pass day pass or annual pass is needed to park at this trailhead.

    Round-Trip Distance: About 4 miles (6.4 k)
    Elevation Gain: About 575 feet (175 m)

I had to get a rental car from Portland to come here, it was raining constantly, there was still quite a bit of snow and it was windy. But I only had that one day, that one try. So I tried and found it. My better half probably thinks I am crazy and probably is right. After the long drive back almost all things were dry again. Anyway - it was a great day with almost everything working out while so many things could have gone wrong. Seeing this cache with my own eyes was certainly an experience. Thanks for maintaining this special cache up there. Of all the listed TBs I however only found three, of which two are to stay in the cache. I took the one and left a couple of others.

Finally Found It... Flew in from Orange County, California to celebrate our 4th Wedding Anniversary in Seattle, WA and could not come this far and not get this cache.. It was quite a task. First got on the wrong trail (what turned out to not be a trail at all) after about an hour of roaming around in the mountain with rain coming down we finally found the real trail. Headed up the trail with freezing bodies and realizing it was getting later.. After some time came across a snow covered bridge and started to get a little worried. Saw someone coming our direction and realized we overshot a turn we were to make.. Finally got on the right trail and after a little walk came across our Biggest Cache ever. It was a nice reward. Great view from the cache location. After some photo ops and checking out the contents we realized we needed to get back down in order to miss the darkness of the trail. Got to the parking lot and saw we were one of two cars left (there was one other crazy person hiking in the cold). TFTC.

After 787 miles, 17 hours and 33 caches I finally arrived at the Annette Lake trailhead parking lot at 10PM... It was raining and snowing so hard my headlights were almost useless... I decided to called it a day and spent an uncomfortable night sleeping in the drivers seat wondering why am I doing this??? After listening to the rain pounding on the roof all night, daybreak finally came... I put on my waterproof gear and started up the trail... I expected to see other cachers, but I guess everyone else was home by the fire... After an hour of hiking, I made it... I have wanted to find this cache for over 5 years... Signed log and browsed contents of cache... When it started snowing harder, I decided it was time to head back to the truck and on to Seattle.... TFTC... And the memorable trip...

Very cool cache! And one more milestone in my geocacher career reached. Thanks to Jeremy and Kellybente who made it possible to me to get in to this loacation! Took some travellers who will go now to Finland and dropped one geocoin which wants to avoid urban caches.
