Geocache Description:

One of the 34 Struve Geodetic points under the World Heritage supervision is located in Meskonys, Lithuania.

Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve, an astronomer of 19th century is known for his famous Arc, a chain of survey triangulations that streaches from Norway to the Black Sea and is nearly 3,000 kilometers long. Originally the Arc contained 265 survey points, 34 of them are on the World Heritage supervision and three of them are in Lithuania. The Arc measurement has been defined as a method for determining the size and shape of the Earth by measuring the length of the arc of triangulation and the astronomic coordinates of the ends of the arc. An arc of meridian is a line that runs in the true North-South direction. Basically the points streatch along the 26 degree E line of the longtitude and currently go through ten countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine.

The cache is hidden near the Meskonys point in Lithuania. It is a small plastic container, the size of about three 35mm film cans, initially containing the logbook with a couple of pencils and some out of circulation coins for swag. A small but powerful neodymium magnet is thrown in there too.
