Geocache Description:

A TEMPORARY CONTAINER IS IN PLACE TILL A MORE PERMANENT CONTAINER CAN BE CONSTRUCTED

In placing this cache I wanted to show people an up close and personal look at the making of steel without going on to the wrong side of the fence. As I scoped out the area looking for a suitable hiding spot I was continually drawn to watch what goes on on the otherside of the fence. Eventually, not wanting to draw attention to fellow cachers I moved away from the proximity of the steelworks to where I stumbled across this spot and its history.

The 'Gabriella' was a heavy lift cargo ship from the Netherlands. On Thursday 14th Aug 1986 whilst unloading at Port Kembla No:2 berth a shift in the load resulted in the capsizing of this ship. Regrettably lives were lost as the ship which had rolled onto its side sank in less than a minute trapping 2 surveyors within the ship.

The cache has been changed to a micro and should be well away from muggles. Be aware this is a popular fishing spot and quite often there are many eyes watching your movements. After completing the cache take the time to have a look around, this is the closest the public can get to the 'Big Australian'.
