As of July 28, 2007, this is now officially a 5/5 cache! Simple,
low-tech rescue efforts have failed (special thanks to remmizjt for
his valiant and daring attempt), but the cache should still be
there!
Here are the facts as we know them:
- In May, the waters of Carter Lake came way up, submerging the
cache.
- The cache was placed under a concrete slab, approximately half
the size of the large slab visible above the water line.
- The waters have not receded, but given the weight of the slab
and position of the cache, both should still be in place (although
there may be silt over the top of the cache by now).
- There has been a blue-green
algae warning posted for the lake - do not go in with any open
wounds and take appropriate precautions (don't totally submerge,
don't drink the water, etc.).
This is now a rescue effort! First to find, please recover the
cache and post a log ASAP. I'll get the cache from you and put it
in a new location, hopefully without some other natural event to
kill it! (This is the second such incident where nature buried my
cache! See the log on September 25, 2005 for the other one.
Original cache details are below. Hopefully the cache should be
returned to normal status soon!
This cache is in Levi Carter park, easily accessible from Eppley
Airfield, and from the Omaha/Council Bluffs area. It's intended as
a spot to help various Hitchikers (Travel Bugs, BookCrossing Books,
etc) along on their journeys. It's an easy cache to find, with no
bushwacking involved, although it is not wheelchair accessible.
Since the point of this cache is to help Hitchikers move along,
the normal rules of equal trade do not apply. However, please keep
the following things in mind to help benefit the travelers here the
most:
- Only leave items that need to be moved along (Travel Bugs,
GeoCoins, etc.). If you're traveling through, you can drop
something off for the Omaha area, or something that needs to go
somewhere else. If you're a local, leave things that need to move
out of Omaha.
- Be sure to log items in and out of the vistor's register. With
it, you can see where a bug is headed, and help it along!
- Only take items that you can help on their journeys. Some items
have very specific goals. Please try to help them reach their
goals!
- Please don't leave the cache completely empty! Leave something
for the next person to find! If the cache is empty, let me know and
I'll work to restock it.
Thanks, and enjoy your stay at the terminal!
