Parking is at a small 6 car dirt lot along Edgell road. You can follow trails right to The Rock. This is a small stream crossing to make.
“The Rock” is an 1800 ton Glacial Erratic that resides in the Town of Framingham’s Nobscot conservation area. It is probably one of the biggest in Massachusetts. From Wikipedia:
“A glacial erratic is a piece of rock that deviates from the size and type of rock native to the area in which it rests; the name "erratic" is based on the errant location of these boulders. These rocks were carried to their current locations by glacial ice.”
To gain credit for this Earthcache, you must complete the following educational task/ science lesson:
Please find the compass orientation of the faces of this boulder, and measure the width of each face. Then compare your findings to ours in the table below.
Since not everyone carries a 100’ tape measure when they hike, we have put one in our nearby Mattress Graveyard geocache (GC137ZB). Please be sure to return it when you are done so it is there for the next group to use.
Please use caution when exploring as there is poison ivy growing on top of the rock.
Face Bearing Width
1 355° 31 feet 3 inches
2 260° 19 feet
3 150° 37 feet
4 70° 15 feet
Supposedly this erratic came off a rock face halfway between Nobscot Mountain and Tippling Rock, but haven't found that yet.
