GPS Art Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

Mushtang: I went by today and it looks like they've given a fresh coat of paint to all the light poles in the parking lot at some point in the past couple of months.

Unfortuately they either removed all the coords to prep for paint, or painted right over them.

Either way I've decided not to put them back. I picked up the container and I'll probably re-hide it somewhere in Buford soon.

I'm glad a lot of people liked this one, and thanks for giving it an award. It was fun.

Geocache Description:

Use your GPSr to create some art!

There has been some very impressive art created with GPS receivers by some very talented people. Look at the gpsdrawing.com gallery to see some of the best. I've tried to make some simple pictures in the past using my Vista with moderate success, but this is your chance to make some of your own.

Here's one Gift and I did at the site of this cache to spell out my username. This is about 0.2 miles wide, 360 feet tall, and the entire track is 1.2 miles long. This is NOT the image you'll draw, but it gives you an idea of what I'm talking about.

For your piece of artwork your canvas will be the parking lot of the Gwinnett County Civic Center and your brush will be the track log of your GPSr. It might be better to visit this location when there isn't a concert or other function at the Civic Center so you're not walking in between parked cars making people (and possibly security) nervous about what you're doing. But this parking lot is available for caching most of the time since events that would fill the lot are rare.

The above coordinates take you to a light pole where you should do several things:
  1. Look for a set of coordinates on the light pole.
  2. Clear the track log from your GPSr so you'll have a fresh background.
  3. Enter the coordinates you found and navigate to the next light pole to look for another set of coordinates.

Along with most of the coordinates you find you'll also see a letter of the alphabet and a number - be sure to write these down! These will be used at the last set of coordinates to point your way to the final cache location hidden nearby.

While you're drawing your artwork you'll walk approx 0.88 miles and locate 31 of the light poles. When you get to the final set of coordinates be sure to look on your GPSr's track log to see what picture you just drew! It might help to turn your GPS around, as the top of the picture faces south.

Okay, so it's not a perfect picture, and it won't be something you'll want to frame and hang on your wall, but it's still pretty neat! When you log your find, feel free to attach images of your track log if you want, but don't post the location of the final cache or your log will be deleted immediately.

Drawing Hints:
  1. If you have more than one person in your party, have someone go ahead of you and find the next coordinates. That way you can walk straight to them and your picture won't get messed up by you walking towards the wrong light pole (like I did a couple of times when I tested it). :)

  2. Reset your tracking to record points more often than normal. The light poles used for this are sometimes as close as 60 feet and by default most GPS receivers won't record a new point until you've traveled farther than that (to save memory).
