DeSoto County Confederate Monument
One of the state's oldest monuments dedicated to the
Confederate dead, this pillar was erected shortly after the War
Between the States. Hernando Memorial Cemetary has the largest
number of Confederate graves in DeSoto County with 100 marked
graves and a mass grave for 60 soldiers.
This is in a small cemetery less than a mile from the historic
town square of Hernando, MS. Hernando is the county seat for the
County of DeSoto. The cemetery is actually comprised of three
adjacent cemeteries that share two common entrances. The cemetery
is open from dawn to dusk, so plan your hunt accordingly. There is
no entrance fee.
Stage One: Is the Monument itself. An additional site to see
nearby (N34 49.112 W089 59.531), and probably close to where you
parked your vehicle, is a plaque with the names of all known
Confederate Soldiers buried in the cemetery.
Stage Two: Turn your back on the monument and look through the
trees to the adjacent burial field. You will see three square
pillars with round stone filials. Make your way to the center
pillar. You will have to walk, there is no roadway.
Final Stage: From the center pillar travel 118 feet at a forward
azimuth of 39.5 degrees.
