Geocache Description:

Most area residents are familiar with the legend that the pirate known as Captain Kidd visited Milford harbor on a number of occasions and that on one of his stops, in 1699, he hid a treasure out on Charles Island. This cache is hidden on Charles Island which is part of Silver Sands State Park. The park closes at dusk.

Of course, the best way to get to the island - certainly the most romantic and authentically piratey way - is to sail out on a boat or perhaps row out in a ship's long boat.

If you have no boat, go to N 41º 11.899 W 073º 03.937 shortly before low tide (spring tide is best, I wouldn't bother with a neap tide) and read one of the signs. Then go ahead and walk out to the island. Spring tides occur when the moon is full or new and provide the lowest low tides.

Park at N 41º 12.055 W 073º 04.131. The cache is about 1.0 flying gull mile from this point. At the south eastern corner of the parking area there is a wooden walkway that crosses the marsh and brings you to the beach. There is handicapped parking closer to the beach.

There is another sign that you should read, located on the island at N 41º 11.516 W 073º 03.403. The sign warns that the interior of the island is a heron and egret nesting area and that it must not be encroached upon. The interior of the island is fenced off. Under no circumstances should you enter the interior of the island. You certainly do not have to leave the shore of the island to find this cache.

Per Connecticut DNR regulations, Charles Island is off limits to human beings from roughly mid May to mid September so that the herons and egrets can make babies in peace. Therefore, I must disable the cache in the Spring and re-enable it in the fall. DNR varies the specific dates of the closer slightly each year.

The cache is contained in a 7.62 mm ammo can and comprises the kind of gaudy baubles that a 17th century pirate might consider deserved to be buried. It is well hidden amid and under rocks. Please re-hide it as you found it to help keep it safe from muggles and Long Island Sound.
