Stockholms universitets studentkår har inte haft något eget kårhus sedan man lämnade kårhuset på Holländargatan under 1970-talet. Administrationen är idag förlagd till det västra Nobelhuset som ligger söder om tunnelbanestationen och den mesta programverksamheten sker i Allhuset. Drömmen om ett eget kårhus har levt kvar och strax innan millennieskiftet drevs ett projekt med mål att bygga ett eget kårhus. En arkitekttävling i två steg genomfördes och det vinnande förslaget, placerat på parkeringen framför södra husen, är ritat av Fredrick Scherman på Erséus arkitektkontor.
Projektet var tänkt att finansieras dels av kårens fonderade medel från försäljningen av kårhuset på Holländargatan, dels av donerade medel från Knut & Alice Wallenbergs stiftelse. Nedgången i börserna i början av 2000-talet ledde till att både kårens och stiftelsens medel minskade och projektet lades på is när inga ytterligare finansiärer kunde hittas.
Under senare år har två viktiga händelser påverkat kårhusets framtid, den ena är Lärarhögskolans sammanslagning med Stockholms universitet 1 januari 2008 och den följande flytten av institutioner från Konradsberg till Frescati. Den andra är kårobligatoriets avskaffande den 1 juli 2010 som sätter kåren i en ekonomiskt sårbar situation. Kårfullmäktige beslutade den 28 januari 2010 att sälja projektet till Akademiska hus, som äger och förvaltar de flesta universitets- och högskolebyggnader i Sverige. Nu ska beslutet nu fattas av Stiftelsen Skeppsbroäng som formellt äger projektet. (Skeppsbroäng är det namn området hade innan Gustav den III ändrade det till Frescati efter sin resa till Italien 1783-1784.) Det hus som avses att byggas kallas nu Studenternas hus och är något bantat jämfört med de ursprungliga planerna, man har tagit bort källaren. Förutom kårens verksamhet kommer två avdelningar från universitetsförvaltningen att flytta in vilket frigör utrymme i Södra huset. Huset beräknas stå färdigt 2012.

Stockholm University's student union has been without a Student Union Building since it left the student union building at Holländargatan in the 1970s. The Administration is currently located in the western Nobel House, which lies south of the metro station and most of the public activities take place in “Allhuset”. The dream of an Student Union Building has persisted and just before the millennium there was a project aimed to build a Student Union Building. An architectural competition in two stages were carried out and the winning proposal, placed on the parking lot in front of “Södra huset” (Large bluish building), designed by Fredrick Scherman on Erséus architecture office.
The project was expected to be financed partly by the Unions funds from the sale of the student union building at Holländargatan, and by donated funds from the Knut & Alice Wallenberg Foundation. The decline in the stock market in the early 2000s led to both the Union's and the foundation's funds fell and the project was put on hold when no additional funding could be found.
In recent years, two major events affected the future of the student union building, one is the Teacher School merger with Stockholm University in the 1st of January 2008 and the subsequent relocation of the institutions from Konradsberg to Frescati. The second is that compulsory student union membership is abolished on 1 July 2010. The latter puts the Union in an economically vulnerable situation. The Union decided January 28, 2010 to sell the project to the “Akademiska hus”, which owns and manages most university and college buildings in Sweden. The decision must now be ratified by the Foundation Skeppsbroäng which formally owns the project. (Skeppsbroäng is the name the area had before King Gustav III changed it to Frescati after his trip to Italy, 1783-1784.) The house being built is somewhat slimmed compared with the original plans, the basement is removed. In addition to the union's activities two divisions of the university administration is moving in, thus freeing space in “Södra huset”. The house should be completed 2012
