Geocache Description:

Easy Micro, short walk from parking lot nearby (no need to walk on the road).

On March 11, 2008 environmental groups took the first step in dismantling the century-old Gruendyke Dam on the Musconetcong River, a project 8 years in the making.

A notch was taken out of the dam, which will allow a gradual draining of the water-ponding behind it, allowing further work to be more easily undertaken. Later this summer (2008) the remainder of the dam will be removed, being replaced with rocky rapids, allowing the river to flow more naturally and freely.

From the cache site you will be able to view the dam and across the river, the pile of boulders/rocks which will be used for the final work. A fishing fly is the prize for FTF.

The dam's removal will reinstate the free flow of water, allowing it to not heat up as it does now behind the dam, benefitting cold-water fish like trout and allowing for fish migration. It will also prevent the growth of warm-water invasive species of plants. Removing the impediment will also be welcomed by canoeists and kayakers.

The Gruendyke is the first of over 20 dams that the Musconetcong Watershed Association plans to remove. A second dam, the Seber Dam upstream of the Gruendyke, will also be removed later this year.

The total cost of the dam removal project will be about $200,000, funded by grants and donations from non-profit groups. MWA's Gruendyke Mill dam project partners to-date include the DelawareRiverkeeper.org, AmericanRivers.org, NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife, National Park Service, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. MWA has obtained resolutions of support from Warren County Freeholders, Morris County Planning Department, Mount Olive Township, Trout Unlimited and the Town of Hackettstown.

Santa Claus came early for lovers of the Musconetcong River on December 22, 2006. On that date, the President signed into law bill S. 1096, the "Musconetcong Wild and Scenic Rivers Act," which designates portions of the Musconetcong River as a component of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. News of the signing brought excited telephone calls and e-mail messages of congratulations from supporters of the designation from Maine to Alaska. 24 miles of the Musconetcong River are now part of the National Wild and Scenic River System!!!

Congrats to JollyOPirates - FTF!
