Ryan Park Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

meralgia: i'm very sad to archive this cache. i had a lot of fun creating it, and i'm sad that it's gone. i used a screwdriver to try and coax the cap off the tube to no avail. i am thankful to say that there are no travel bugs entombed within.

Geocache Description:

This cache is not at the listed coordinates; the coordinates bring you to a plaque of Mr. Dennis Patrick Ryan.

  • For the next North coordinates, subtract Ryan's year of birth (‘xx) from the original North.
  • For the next West coordinates, add Ryan's year of death (‘xx) to the original West and subtract 100.
You may get sand in your shoes when you go for the final. Please add more when you replace the cache. The park is is an extremely quiet one, so stealth is recommended but probably not necessary.

If the final puts you out of the park boundaries, your in the wrong spot; please re-check your math. (Keep in mind that you're only working with the last three digits after the decimal.)

The park address is 618 Avon St. N. (1.17 acres)

Here is some interesting trivia from a book entitled, "The Street Where You Live." (p236) "This one-and-one-fifth-acre park in Frogtown at Thomas Avenue and Avon Street was previously the site of the Benjamin Drew Elementary School. When the school closed in 1974, the city bought the property to build single-family homes. By the early 1980’s, the neighbors wanted a park on the site, and in 1983 the city agreed to consider the request. On February 15, 19__, a local businessman Dennis Patrick Ryan, age 51, was shot and killed during a robbery at his plumbing store... The local community then contributed funds toward the park, requesting it be named for Ryan."

According to a source on the internet, Ryan Park has gone through a lot of changes. In the 90s and early 2000s, prostitutes and drug dealers took over the park. But through the Weed and Seed initiative between 1998 and 2004, the neighborhood fought back. Outdoor movies and family activities were held there to dissuade negative activity and the police conducted undercover stings in the nearby area to arrest drug dealers. Community marches for peace helped drive home the idea that neighbors had had enough.
