Geocache Description:

A short history of Lamoni, Iowa from iagenweb.org:

The First United Order of Enoch, an corporation comprised of members who were men of means and affliated with the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint, met in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on September 19, 1870. After visiting Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa, the committee selected Fayette Township in Decatur County. 2,680 acres of land were purchased for $21,786.84. They called the new settlement "The Colony." Originally, proposals were made to rename the town Sedgwick, the name of the post office. Eventually the name Lamoni [after a pacifist king from The Book of Mormon] was selected.

Charles Hyde and David Vredenburg both lived in the Lamoni area and established what would become the HyVee Grocery chain in the 1920s and 1930s.  The Lamoni store, which opened in August of 1932, has the longest continuous presence as a Hy-Vee Store in the chain.

Charles Hyde and his second wife Mabel resided in Lamoni for the remainder of their lives. Charles served as Lamoni's mayor from 1947 to 1949. A short time before his death in 1970, he resided in a Leon nursing home.

Charles Hyde (1883-1970) and David Vredenburg (1884-1949) were both interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, located west of Lamoni.

The Boy Scouts have had a presense in Lamoni since around 1920.  The March 11, 1925 issue of the Saints' Herald carried this Lamoni news item:

Through the efforts of Brother George Mesley, of Australia, who is a student at Graceland, a Wolf Cub Pack has been organized among the boys from 8 to 12 years of age. The Wolf Cubs is an organization whose work is preliminary to the Boy Scouts. Through story-telling and games they are taught the principles of teamwork, unselfishness, service, and other ideals which are later required as a part of the Boy Scout ritual. The organization is national in England but has not yet been introduced in America, though such action is contemplated by the nation scout organization of this country. Our pack will be enrolled in England for the present. Thirty-seven boys of the local Religio are organized in a Wolf Cub Pack, which is divided into six groups known as sixes, under a leader known as a sixer. They meet regularly on Wednesday evening preceding the prayer meeting. Brother Mesley is assisted by Brother Leonard Bish of Des Moines, another Gracelander.
