Midland Trail CITO Sunday 4/23
|
Clean up of Midland Trail - 21st street to America The
Beautiful Park - Coordinated with the Parks Department - Optional
Lunch Beforehand at a resturant
|
|
|
Midland Trail is a new trail - newly poured concrete over an
old railroad bed. The Eastern end starts at 'America The Beautiful
Park' renamed from 'Confluence Park'. This park is so new that it
has the old name, and doesn't show on the satellite images, on
online maps. The trail goes under I25, over Monument Creek, and
goes aproximately along Hwy24 to 21st Street. The park is just
North of the 'cloud factory' as Pirate #3 named it - the generating
plant.

|
By popular demand, this CITO will be on Sunday, the day after
the big Earth Day/International CITO day.
This will allow people who want to do a CITO on Earth Day and this
CITO on the second day. It also allows those who cannot make a
Saturday clean up, a chance to be part of an Earth Day Weekend
CITO.

The event timing will be the following:
12:00 noon - A local resturant will be picked, and the coordinates
will be posted. This will be an optional pre-event get
together.
1:30pm Meet at 'America The Beautiful Park' - we will coordinate
rides from this Eastern end of the trail to the Western end. That
way the end of the clean up will be at the park.
2:00pm Start the clean up on the Western end of Midland Trail from
21st street. Anyone running late or with limited time can meet us
there.
3:30pm aproximately - finish the clean up at America The Beautiful
Park. The kids can get to play on this nice, new playground as a
reward for cleaning/making it down the trail. The rest of the
cachers can visit as long as they want at the park. Anyone who
needs a ride back to 21st street will be arranged at that time.

I set this up with the City of Colorado Springs Parks
Department. The location was chosen as a logical mid-point for the
local Geocahers who have expressed an interest in this Sunday
CITO.

|
I checked the Eastern half of this Trail 3/17, and there was
not a lot of clean up needed. It may be this trail had just been
maintained within the week before. By 4/23 there may be a lot more
clean up needed. If not, it will be an easy clean up, with lots of
time to visit and enjoy the geo-challange(s).
|
|
There will be a geo-contest along the trail-clean-up with
prizes at the end.

In case of bad weather - the CITO will be rescheduled for
Sunday 5/21.
|
|
Please bring work gloves. Trash bags will be provided. Sun
protection is strongly recommended: sun block, hats, etc. I will
arrange water bottles for the crew. If you have any sort of
trash-picking stick, you will find that helpful. I do not think any
other equipment will be required - stay tuned for any
updates. |
Getting to the park is a little tricky - see the encrypted hint
for directions
2006-04-21 - I have not heard any objections or alternate ideas -
so pre-event lunch is at Chipotles downtown - no reserved seating,
it may be busy, so we will do what we can :) See you there or on
the trail!
2006-04-23 - It was a fantastic day and a fantastic turn out -
thanks to everyone who made it to the clean-up!
