Geocache Description:

Here in the South, barbecue initially revolved around the cooking of pork.

During the 19th century, pigs were a low maintenance food source that could be released to forage for themselves in the surrounding countryside. Then when meat supplies starting running low, these semi-wild pigs could be caught and eaten.

Prior to the Civil War, it is estimated that Southerners ate around five pounds of pork for every one pound of beef. Because of the effort to capture and cook these wild hogs, pig slaughtering became a time for celebration, and the whole neighborhood would be invited to participate. The traditional Southern barbecue grew out of these gatherings.

Newnan has seen many barbeque restaurants come and go over the years. But they all didn’t start out as restaurants. One had its start as a gas station………….

In 1926 the owner of one particular gas station was selling enough barbeque sandwiches out of the back of his station to be able to close down the pumps and go into the restaurant business full time. The owner’s BBQ sauce, and his wife’s Brunswick stew, soon made it the most popular eating spot in Newnan at the time. Four generations of this family have provided service to travelers, businessmen and women and local residents for over 80 years. Country music star Alan Jackson waited tables here during high school. And Lewis Grizzard, the late Southern humorist/columnist from nearby Moreland, was a frequent patron. His meal of choice, a barbeque sandwich, Brunswick stew and onion rings, now bears his name – “The Lewis Grizzard Special”.

When you arrive at the posted coordinates you will be looking for a silver bison tube hidden at the tornado siren pole. There's only room for the log, so bring your own pen. Please remember to replace the cache carefully and exactly as you found it as this can be a very busy place.

And stop in for a bite to eat while you’re there!!!!

This is one of the caches in the series "Newnan, The City of Homes" that you will need to find. It has partial coordinates on a strip of laminated paper inside the container for finding Newnan, The City of Homes: “Southern Charm”.

Happy caching!!!!

Congratulations to Martin, from Franklin, GA on another FTF!!!!
