The Gogebic Iron Range was one of the nation's chief sources of high grade iron ore, from the discovery of Bessemer ore in 1884 until the last mine closed in the 1960s. From the core samples on display at the Welcome Center on the border to fenced off caving grounds discovered walking in the woods, the remains of the region's iron mining history can be discovered if one pays attention.
A large mural depicting area citizens as miners has recently been completed in downtown Ironwood. The posted coordinates will bring you face to face with the painting. Gather the information and complete the coordinates that will bring you to Miners Memorial Heritage Park nearby. This park features trails that take you through the remains of the Aurora and Pabst mines, with some signs of the mining industry to be discovered throughout. The trails are groomed in the winter for cross country skiing and snowshoeing, so a visit during that season might be a great time to haul out your gear. The cache is a small camo taped coffee container, wired to its beacon. Simply remove the cover to retrieve the log and make trades, then pop the lid right back on. No need to undo the wire!
Enjoy viewing what remains of the old mining operations as you walk in the footsteps of history. This park continues to be developed for the enjoyment of all by the Friends of Miners Memorial Heritage Park. The Park is “Dedicated to those who toiled underground to work these mines. Many died in the darkness so future generations could live in the light.” Many families from this area, including Trekkin's, toiled underground for the mining industry when it was in its heyday, and many did suffer losses in this dangerous line of work. Take time to reflect on the area history as you enjoy seeking this cache.
