In the 1960's, when several counties of Northern California and Southern Oregon were moving to separate into the State of Jeffereson, Redding was a strong candidate to "unseat" Yreka as the Capital of the 51st State. This effort was not nearly as strong as previous efforts and the proposal made no progress.
