This area is part of the West Penwith Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty. Please take time to admire the stunning coastal
views, but also bear in mind that this makes it very popular with
walkers, so stealth will be required when retrieving the
caches.
Although in places the landscape appears to have been
"devastated" by the mining industry, these areas not only represent
an internationally important cultural legacy, but also provide an
increasingly important and diverse wildlife habitat for rare birds,
plants, insects and more.
Adders are known in the area, so please take extra care during
the summer months, especially if you have dogs or small children
with you.
At each stage there will be questions to answer that will give
you the coordinates for the next stage. Please bring a pen and
paper with you to write down the questions, answers and
coordinates. DO NOT take any of the stages or laminates away with
you as other cachers may be looking for them! We also recommend
that you bring a printout of the hints with you. Each stage will
give you a bit of history about the area around the stage. The
containers for the first five stages are all micros (35mm film
canisters). Please take care to replace each stage exactly as
found - especially stage three.
The nearby Levant and Geevor mines are both open for guided
tours during the summer months if you would like to further
investigate the area's mining heritage. A cafe is available at
Geevor for refreshments and offers excellent coastal views.
The cache has been named "Fool's Gold Rush" because as well as
the tin, copper and arsenic that the mines produced, a lot of iron
pyrite (commonly known as fool's gold) was also excavated by the
miners. A "nugget" of fool's gold has been left in the cache.
Please do not swap the nugget, leave it in the cache for others
to see.
The main coordinates above will take you to stage 1. Parking is
available at the coordinates given below. A bus service is
available - take no. 17A (or during the summer no. 300) from
Penzance, St. Just or St. Ives to Trewellard. Apply Hint 1 to the
first stage.
