This cache was created as a result of Scientists: A spawner cache
(GC22GVD), by Photino. I chose Stephen Jay Gould because his
studies of paleontology interest me. As a geology major in college,
I took courses in historical geology and paleontology, spending
many hours studying fossils. We learned how we could learn about
ancient life and how it evolved by examining rocks which contained
clear imprints of early life on earth.
Stephen Jay Gould is perhaps best known to most of
us as an author of many essays in Natural History magazine. He was
born in 1941 and grew up in Queens, NY. He spent most of his career
as a professor of geology at Harvard University. He also worked at
the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
Gould was best known for developing a new theory of evolution
called “punctuated equilibrium”. This theory states
that “evolutionary change occurs relatively rapidly, as
compared to longer periods of relative evolutionary stability. He
used several varieties of land snails for much of the research he
did on his evolutionary theory. He also spent time campaigning against
“creationism”, the belief that all life on Earth was
created by a supernatural being.
The cache is located on the Waterbury Community path near its
end on Guptil Road. You can drive a short distance up Country Club
Rd. and park at N 44°21.207 W072°44.074 in an area which has room
for a few cars. In winter when conditions are icy, the road is
gated, and you may park outside the gate and walk up to the
suggested parking. The cache is a few hundred feet walk along the
trail from the parking area, and is a lock&lock
container.
