Blue Lagoon Revival Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Quadbarrel: Went to have a look for this one today, and there is not sign of it.

Sad to be archiving this cache - it is a fantastic spot that gets hardly any visitors. But neither does this cache. Geocaching has grown massively in the last couple of years, and yet this cache has only had 3 visitors in a year. So unfortunately we are going to archive it.

Maybe someone else will create a "Blue Lagoon Revival Revived"!?!

Geocache Description:

A cache close to the old Blue Lagoon cache (GC263EY) that used to be here, and which we very much enjoyed.

The cache is so named because on the satellite images of the area, this flooded quarry is an amazing blue colour. Looks like it should be somewhere tropical rather than the Central Belt of Scotland!

Pilmuir Quarry was opened on the 15th May 1930, on the site of North Hillhead Farm. We have not managed to establish what came out of the quarry, but from the point at which it was closed, which would seem to be not too long after it opended, it has been surrounded by controversy. Over a number of years, there have been several high profile attempts to use the quarry for landfill, which thankfully have always ended in refusal of permission. To this day though, the quarry is owned by Biffa Waste Services Ltd.

The lagoon itself is very deep, and very cold. There is an excellent fence all the way around the quarry site - please do not try to get to the other side.

The cache itself is located on an old lane, which was probably something to do with the long gone farm. From the GZ you can also see, and walk towards Pilmuir Reservoir. This was constructed by Alexander Crum in the mid 1800s to provide further water supplies to the extensive works that the family had developed around Thornliebank.

Best place to park is at East Renfrewshire Golf Club, and walk back along the cycle path to the gate in the fence (waypoint provided) to the field, and then follow the arrow.
