At the end of the road to Glenmore Lodge is a small car parking
area. This is sometimes busy as the walk along the Thieves Road to
the cache area is very popular. Glenmore Lodge is the Scottish
national outdoor centre.
The Thieves Road was an old route for cattle raiders returning from
trips down the Spey with their ill gotten gains. A prominent
lookout point above Lochain Uaine (the Green Lochan) gave
widespread views up and down the pass and warned of incomers. The
actual pass is a glacial overflow channel - there are quite a few
of these in this area. The nearby Chalamain Gap is another good
example. The lookout hill is also a glacial funnel hole
deposit.
After the lochan, the pass opens out and it is only a short
distance to Ryvoan Bothy for those who wish to go a bit
further.
The cache is (hopefully) away from prying eyes a short distance
from the Lochan. Do not follow your GPSr blindly - find the small
path leading away from the lochan on the west side first please.
This is directly opposite the steps down to the lochan.
At the cache site, GPSr reception can be a bit variable because of
the surrounding hills and trees. I have been here twice and the
coordinates have varied each time. Because of this, there is a more
explicit clue.
Its about 35 minutes walk to this cache - good tracks and paths
nearly all the way.
In this cache, there is part of the location of a Strathspey bonus
cache. You will need to visit each of these caches to get the full
set of coordinates:
Craiggowrie
Ryvoan
Speybank
Burma Road
Sluggan Bridge
