Geocache Description:

A regular sized cache placed at Collins Beach. A "HISTORYCACHE" by the Hyperborean Wanderer.

Welcome to Collins Beach! The cache is hidden at what was once, in the mid 1800s, a very popular resort known as Hygenia House. An estimated category 2 hurricane moved through Delaware in 1878, causing a massive ten foot tidal wave due to high tide and storm surge. The wave destroyed every building in the popular resort except for the hotel. It also impacted and changed the ecology of the entire area, creating a large salt marsh and destroying the beach. It is a largely forgotten bit of Delaware history. Also, for kicks, I have included a question in the log book that I, as a history and writing teacher, would love to have some answers for. Participation is optional but I hope many people do. It's a fun question.
