The Event
Another get together in Monterey - and part of a Worldwide multi event. Our local event is six in the evening until closing - so a good way to end the geocaching day
Pi Day
Pi Day is an annual celebration commemorating the mathematical constant π (pi). Pi Day is observed on March 14 (or 3/14 in the month/day date format), since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant digits of π in decimal form. In 2009, the United States House of Representatives supported the designation of Pi Day.
Pi Day Trivia
In the year 2015, Pi Day will have special significance on 3/14/15 at 9:26:53 a.m. and p.m., with the date and time representing the first 10 digits of π. That same second will also contain a precise instant corresponding to all of the digits of π. However, some argue that 9:26:54 a.m. and p.m. on 3/14/15 are more accurate because of the 11th digit of π being 5, which would cause the 10th digit to round up to 4.
Souvenirs
Two digital souvenirs are up for grabs on 3.14 (March 14th) at the geocaching.com site. The first souvenir is inspired by the groups of people who have an irrational love for irrational numbers. Just attend an event, including CITO or a Mega-Event on Pi Day and you’ll earn this souvenir. The second souvenir celebrates the mystery of pi—to earn it, log a “Found It” on a Mystery Cache on March 14. Look for a new pi-themed mystery cache published near the event to make it easy to get the second souvenir (and remeber to log it on the 14th).
Geek game at the event
Game pieces will be distributed after we have all arrived and gotten settled at the event. The object is to arrange game pieces to represent more consecutive digits of π — starting with the most significant digit — than anyone else at the event. Thou shalt not steal and thou shalt do no murder, but most everything else is allowed in the pursuit of consecutive significant digits of π! You may team up. You may swap the pieces you were dealt. You may even connive, hornswoggle, and swindle. The game will be called after an hour or when it is obvious that a winner and second place winner have achieved insurmountable numbers of consecutive digits. First and second prizes are unactivated “wise owl” geocoins.
Multi event geocoin
The Monterey Bay version of a multi-event geocoin will be available at the event. It is fully trackable at geocaching.com. See the description page background for a preview. This same design with a different color scheme will be available at selected “Pi Day” events.
