The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was built on the outskirts of Indianapolis in 1909, and the first race was held there in 1911. A year later, Lem Trotter drafted plans for Speedway City—an industrial community to be developed in the area adjacent to the new Motor Speedway. This new city was to be “horseless,” reflecting its commitment to industry, transportation, and progress. Much as the track was a testing ground for automotive technology, Speedway City was to be a laboratory for living in the new automotive era. Its creators envisioned a utopia devoid of the problems typically associated with modern living. Carl Fisher, one of the town’s four founders, said in a 1909 interview that in Speedway City “the homes would be homes and not the kind of shacks that usually infest an industrial center.” An advertisement for “Beautiful Speedway City” encouraged people to purchase land and build new homes and businesses there; it touted the sidewalks, water, gas, electric lights, interurban train service and “splendid gravel roadway.”
The Town of Speedway is now on the verge of major change - a major redevelopment plan consisting of three phases is in the works. What form the redevelopment will ultimately take and how it will bring the needed change to Speedway is unknown, but it's fun to envision the possibilities. In time, I will place more caches within Speedway. As redevelopment occurs, I encourage visitors to see and experience the changes in Speedway during this exciting time!
While I don't know if Leonard Park itself will be affected by the upcoming redevelopment in Speedway, just to the south of the cache location lies an old rail line which will become part of a new rail trail bike/walker's path, which ultimately will go through the new Main Street area, and connect Speedway with downtown Indianapolis.
Parking is available in the northeast corner of the park, adjacent to the Speedway Police Department. Depending upon when you go, this could be a very high muggle area - so use stealth!
You are looking for a regular size, camoed, peanut butter-esque jar hidden within Speedway's Leonard Park. The cache contains a log book & pencil, an Indianapolis Motor Speedway lapel pin for the FTF and several Speedway / race related items.
No hint right now...I think this one's pretty easy! Have fun!
