In Norse
mythology, Yggdrasil (also called the World Tree) is the giant ash
tree that shelters and links all the worlds. Beneath the three
roots lie the realms of Asgard, Jotunheimm and Niflheim. Three
wells also lie at its base - the Well of Wisdom (Mimisbrunnr), the
Well of Fate (Urdarbrunnr), and the Hvergelmir (Roaring Kettle),
the source of many rivers. Four deer run across the branches,
representing the four winds. There are other inhabitants of the
tree, such as the squirrel Ratatosk ("swift teeth") a notorious
gossip, and Vidofnir ("tree snake") the golden cock that perches on
the topmost bough. The roots are gnawed upon by Nidhogg and other
serpents. On the day of Ragnarok, the fire giant Surf will set the
tree on fire.
Bring a
bright flashlight. This cache involves bushwacking.
Park at the co-ordinates listed.
Walk down the driveway about 25 to 30 metres. Search the trees
along the right side for amber and white reflectors. Your
flashlight will pick up the next set of amber and white reflectors
on another tree in the woods.
Continue to follow the amber and white reflectors until you get to
a tree which has both two amber and two white reflectors. Mark the
coordinates for this one.
From here, you will follow the white ones to the left to gather the
North coordinates from tags on the bases of the same trees the
white reflectors are on. Return to the tree you marked. Going
right, you follow the amber reflectors to gather the West
coordinates from tags on the bases of the same trees the amber
reflectors are on.
There are 7 trees with white reflectors, and 8 trees with amber
reflectors. Each tag is labelled with an alphabetic letter to give
you the order in which to put the numbers (for example, if the
first two amber tags read A8 and B7 your first two West coordinates
are 87).
Clear as mud?
Once you have the 15 numbers, you have the coordinates to find
Yggdrasil and the cache he is guarding. Return to the driveway and
continue on your journey.
And believe
me - you will recognize Yggdrasil when you see him!
