A boat is REQUIRED to reach this cache, it is on an island. The boat is the hard part. You should not attempt to swim to this cache. The cache is located on Goat Island in Lake Barkley State Park. It is in the Little River area of Lake Barkley. This is a popular fishing, recreational boating, water skiing, etc. area. Lake Barkley can be difficult to navigate especially when it’s level is not up to summer pool, some areas are too shallow to safely navigate at any time. It would be advisable to carry a navigation map if you are not familiar with the area. If you stay in the marked channels you should be fine. Beaching your boat near the channel at the Northwest corner of the island & hiking from there would be recommended. Be aware that the island is big enough that it doesn’t appear like one from the boat as you approach. The Barkley State Park Marina is a good place to put your boat in or rent one. You can also launch at Moon River Marina or rent a boat there. Both would require about a 2½ mile boat ride if you follow in the channel markers. The State Park Ramp is about @ N36 51.180 W87 56.544. Moon River Ramp is about @ N36 52.290 W87 53.621 & their Marina is nearby, just across the bridge. Rivers End, another smaller public ramp is @ N36 51.548 W87 58.056 near the mouth of Little River entering Lake Barkley. Please keep the cache well concealed due to the fact that water borne muggles like to get out & explore the island. Use your bug repellent, ticks are plentiful. According to the Park Manager, Goat Island got its name from the goats that were trapped there when the lake was impounded. There were goats there as we placed the cache. The Park does not put them there & it is suspected that local farmers manage the number of goats there each year. We have seen many deer, raccoons, mink, etc. on the Island & nearby shores. You might even spot us fishing, boating, or water skiing nearby. Look for a Monark pontoon boat in the summer or a Bass Tracker III in the spring when we are fishing. There are several caches near the shores of Lake Barkley if you are boating up & down the lake.
