August 24, 2009 by flyingmoose (1903 found) After a nice night camping out nearby lake meade I made my way out to this cache for a nice find and maybe even a nice view. I enjoyed every bit of this one. I had a little suzuki rental car and made my way up the powerlines passing an old guy and his dog picking up the beer cans sprawled about. I found a decent space to park and made my way up hill to the cache. I got to the site and thought I would have a hell of a time looking for it but thankfully the container was not too difficult to get to. Funny enough, after I left I headed back into town to return the car and meet up with some others and I figured I should wash the dust off, glad I did, seems the car got a flat. Thankfully I had enough air to get more air then I returned it. Thanks for the fun cache! flyingmoose

February 20, 2009 by rangertom (128 found) out exploring today had a hard time finding the right road the signs were on the ground, stopped to read them and saw we were on the right track. We are here visiting from Indiana these out of the way caches are fun but the climb is a little rough for us flatlanders. found the cache exchanged the bobbin head Woody for eye glass repair kit. headed down to the next one we were not up for another climb, so we headed on down the road to the next one. We stayed to the marked trail then found no more marks. We ended up at the wetlands area but all roads are fenced off could find no way to get threw. We were not looking forward to the drive all the way back when we found a place to slip through, we could not have done it if we were not in a jeep and the gate happened to be unlocked.

November 18, 2007 by Galaad (3844 found) 2 of 3 during our third and last day in Las Vegas, baby! GC'ing around with Mrs Ti-Pou, we've traveled from Montréal, Québec for a busy week-end in the desert. We come here under OpusTerra's suggestion. We are sooo-way-out of our natural environnement! There are not many place to hide in the desert: no bushes to say so, and anybody can unknowingly catch you up when you are down in a wash I am amazed at the colorful beauty surrounding me. My eyes have so much to examine that they spot one view after the other without having the time to take all in! Vegetation fights with a grandiose effort to survive. The dry irradiant ground heat contrasts with a surprisingly cool breeze when we travel into the washes' shadows, away from the sun. The colours are vibrant and yet, all is envelopped in grandeur and calm. Blue, yellow, red, green, pink and white find a way to express themselves in beautiful ways. We can feel lucky in our lives when we are granted to admire such nature! The hike up to the cache is not too difficult but we take our time to choose our way and climb safely, checking the balance of every rock before we step forward. T: pictures L: aaawwwhhhh! SL. 5 of last 12 loggers are Quebecers! We were as careful coming back down, taking our time to manage the sharp-edged stones. We threw a bit of sand and pebbles on a few trails to powder our Jeep well, and we finish our adventure driving through Mead Lake Park. There are not many girls four-wheeling in the desert with the guys, let alone on their own! We waved and grinned at a whole bunch of guys with surprised looks on their faces GC#1768

May 4, 2006 by Sioneva (1466 found) It wasn't as hot today, particularly near dusk! And from something Kelly let drop, the construction crews can't work when it gets too windy - and so today was perfect for caching unobserved. :) Parked about 6/10 mile off, in one of the construction parking slots, and really enjoyed the walk there and back. Hid the cache better then I found it - it was bigger then I expected, I'd only brought small swag.Left signature VT postcard Took sunscreen and the TB hitched a ride, too.

May 1, 2006 by Sioneva (1466 found) This was without a doubt my most fun DNF. Emboldened by the logs below about the road being well-graded, me and my little Honda Civic set out for fun and games at 9:30, hoping to beat the heat. Might have done it, too, if I hadn't turned off on Rainbow Gardens road instead of Lava Butte. Not nearly as well-graded, but made it to a point about .5 miles from the cache. Supposedly. It got bloody HOT bloody fast. Hike hike hike, make it to the power line road. Lots of construction vehicles. I relaxed in the shade of one - this was about 11:30. Their environmental advisor, who is named Kelly by the way, was very nice and drove me up the power line road (which turned out to BE the Lava Butte Road - I waypointed the intersection with Lake Mead) and back down to my car. I guess they were worried I'd get dehydrated, though I had plenty of water. Anyway... Kelly knew a lot about the ecology and geology of the area, and it was a good length drive. I really learned a lot. I wish I could have talked with her longer! Oh... I'll go back tomorrow at the crack of dawn and look for the cache again. From the right road.

We started our journey from Lake Las Vegas and had some trouble finding the correct road to the cache area. We went down a couple of unmarked roads before finally finding the correct one off the highway. We got to within 800 feet or so and parked. The weather was perfect and we started our climb near the bottom. We got close and finally had to go a little higher to make the find. Great view. Took deck of cards, left TB.

January 11, 2006 by The Falconeers (35 found) I did this one with Nisqually on a visit to Las Vegas from the UK. What a fantastic cache!I am not a particularly confident rock scrambler and have a mild fear of edges/heights/falling, but knowing that the cache was there pushed me up the last few feet. What a fantastic view it was when I got there!! There was a lot of construction going on on the dirt road from Lake Mead and the path of the road seems to have changed since the topo map we had with us was published. Parked the car up about a mile away from the cache due to all the construction and hiked up the washes looking for interesting rocks. Took plenty of water with us though :-) Cache was in great shape. Took nothing, signed log and left a British One Pound coin. Thanks for the great cache! The Falconeers.

January 11, 2006 by Nisqually (28 found) This cache took awhile to get to because we were having fun exploring the area on the route to the cache. We did not take a direct path but wandered around the washes and road and the formations in between. There were construction crews working on the road to this area and beyond to the View from Lava Butte cache. It should be a good road when they are done with it. I did this one with The Falconeers. Took nothing, left a British coin.

Wer drove to within 200m of cache and Mcmack and I set off you the hill to search. The gps siganls were bouncing all over (must be the minerals in the rocks). Good thing we had Mr. M along he used his Gps brain to find this one. After McMack saw the hiding spot he said that he must have stepped on it. The cache is in great condition and well hidden for such a big container. Took: flower pen and left: 2 AA batteries. Also I am dropping off the Zoology TB, it wants to return to his home in Nebreska. His mission to travel to zoos is done. I though this would be a great chance to get him alittle close to home. Glad to see this cache is still active, I hope it will be around for awhile longer. Not that I would recommend it, but Bucky & I made it back here in a Nissan Sentra (OK OK, it was a rental. Just don't tell on us! )Neat area back here. I could see where we were going as soon as we pulled off of the main road. For a cache in the desert with around 130 finds, the trail to the site was in surprisingly good shape. January 25, 2004 by BigSpike (229 found) Looks like we were the second ones here today. It was a tough climb for 4-yr-old Little Spike but he made it. Took three 9-yr-old geomuggles along and they loved it. Many trades, did not keep track. Signed logbook. The drive out heading west was a little tricky. There are so many newly cut roads back there that I ended up getting lost in the canyons, but I knew that as long as I kept heading down hill, I would eventually get to Hollywood Drive and the Las Vegas Wash. When I got down near the wash, I came upon a concrete barrier blocking the road. When I got myself turned around, I found myself right across the wash from Lake Las Vegas. After only about 100 yards of backtracking, I found a trail heading over a hill toward Lake Las Vegas, I took it and when I got over the hill, I was 50 feet from the unfinished end of the paved road that took me back up the hill to Lake Mead Drive.

March 22, 2003 by Mr. P (6349 found) I've been meaning to do this one since last summer. Figured I better get to it while the temps are still only in the 70s. Parked in the wash by the power lines and hiked up to the cache. Traded a remote control car for the blue shark. Picked up the cow TB that's looking to go to Texas. I'll be heading that way soon and will drop it off there. Thanks for the hunt.

March 8, 2003 by Mr and Mrs Rhino (157 found) Quite the place, great hike, cache was fairly well hidden, not out in the open. The #3 picture of sign, sign gone, however was an easy find to area and cache. Great photo op, so be sure to take your camera along. Our government sure took the fun out of driving our back roads. Native Nevadans and Great Americans, but hated to pay the $5.00 to make a shorter trip back home to GV. Sold the boat long ago so this was over 7 years since down this road, but it sure is beautiful country--Thanks for reminding us. This is our 2nd for your caches, and you really must do more, GREAT areas!! Thanks again. T/magnetic memo pad for our Utah cabin & Smokey the Bear Pin for the Bear Clan. Oh well we had fun anyway. This was not a promising start to our Nevada cache hunt. Must have walked over it several times. We went to the towers west of the ones that were in the wash and came at it that way. It was a little tough crossing the wash.My 5 yr old was fascinated at the rocks and was trying to start an avalanche, so I wasn't able to look all that hard for the cache. We also noticed that the sign shown on your cache page has been obliterated. Check the plastic marker posts at the sides of the trail to make sure you are on the right course. Maybe if someone could email me the location, I'm really puzzled as to where it was, just for curiosity sake. Enjoyed the other sights in the area b4 heading back to town. mcmack [last edit: 2/10/2003 3:39:16 PM PST]

January 29, 2003 by longwalker (2934 found) We walked from the road about .16 miles to the cache. A better parking spot would be near the twin towers just a little north. I didn't see any numbers on the towers but one of them has it's legs in the wash. If you park there you will see a trail that makes it easier to cross the wash to the cache site. It's not an easy walk to the cache, but if you take it easy it's not to bad. We saw several large lizards in the area, one over a foot long. Took a purple stuffed owl and left two Tropicana Hotel dice. There is a disposable camera in the cache and all the pictures have been taken. I checked the old logs and the camera was placed by Mojavecacher back on May 27, 2002. Maybe the next finder can take it and post the photos. There are no Tbugs in the cache, Lucky 7 is among the missing. There were some ivory colored dice but no bug atached. This was also noted by another cacher on June 27, 2002.[last edit: 1/29/2003 10:20:07 PM PST]

Found the cache with The Ski Bum. You are right, some formations here seem very out of place. Poked around for awhile, thought we were going to be joined by other cachers, but it was just a truck full of people with REALLY loud music, could hear it all the way to the cache. While at the cache saw about 6 helicopters (civilian I think), must be flying tours or something. Took a PT cruiser and a Ramada chip and left a Las Vegas coffee mug and a purple Nerdluck. I don't recall seeing the Lucky 7 travel bug. On the way down, we saw a lizard that looked as big as an aligator...REALLY!

I had been meaning to hit this cache for some time now, I even drove in about a month ago in my jeep but it was to dark when we got there to attempt the climb. I was hoping to take the travel bug, but just like other caches in this area the TBs are missing without being logged. For those of you who might be going after it THE LUCKY 7 TRAVEL BUG IS NOT HERE !! Someone by the name of GREMLIN wrote in the cache log that he took it and was going to place it in the cache SCOUTS HONOR approx. a month ago. Cache is still in good shape. We left a Hotwheel that we picked up from the Creepy Cache and also left behind two golfballs. Took the Pockey Swiss Army Knife and the Wire Cutters. Lots lof loose rocks on the way up to this one so people that have bad backs / bad knees may want to take it slow and bring a walking stick. -C/J

January 1, 2002 by treborzepol (154 found) Early Afternoon - Managed to get pretty close to this cache in a car. My brother, Mondou2, spotted this one from the other rocks. What a nice cache and a great view. Lots of goodies to choose from. We both had questions about the pile of black rocks that look out of place and were placed there by you. This will be highly recommended by me to future visitors. I took the first aid kit and left a powerbar and some new years eve party favors from Ceasar's, LV. Thanks for the memories. This was one of my favorites.treborzepol Austin, TX

December 29, 2001 by Swandog (58 found) We take our Dodge Caravan where others fear to tread! After a rough and tumble road we stopped under the nastiest looking power lines you can ever hope to see. It seems they had a lot to say too as they hissed and crackled at us. Not to worry, however. We were off to the cache. Up up and up. Right to a the edge of a cliff - Yikes! GPS said 100 more feet to go! The dog looked at me with those this can't be right eyes. After a minor course correction we were on the trail again. Jackpot. No sooner had we opened the cache than a string of tour helicopters came buzzing by. Bet we're having more fun than they. Took a small finger skate toy and left the microcache travel bug and pinky highbounce - the team's trademark. Go fetch it!

December 16, 2001 by ic_nevadamike (80 found) Related Web Page Got your coordinates, didn't look further to see your directions and pics. I think you should encrypt the directions.... The greatest accompishment is determinine how to travel to the GeoCashe. ...Anyway.... I drove till I was about 1.8 miles away, pulled off the road and started the trek toward the GeoCache at 3:30pm. Found it about a hour later. Cache was pretty well hidden, but I was able to see part of the orange bucket. I took the mysterious All Knowing Orb, left key ring, fluorescent orange marker, un-used ear plugs, sight saver wipe for your glasses. Had a nice hike in the dark back to the car.

December 15, 2001 by Seegmiller (35 found) Related Web Page We planned this Saturday outing with our long time GPS friends who had never heard of Geocaching. They are hooked now! Even though a stiff 24 mph north wind kept us freezing cold, we found the cache in good condition and had fun doing it.Whoever is the next at this cache will have a chance at the Magic 8 Ball I pulled from the Gold Butte cache last February. And don't miss Outdoor Cat, hidden by the same group. What a surprise.

November 21, 2001 by mountainlions (35 found) Third Las Vegas cache for the Mountionlions from St. Louis. Tough hill to climb but an excellent cache spot. Was a beautiful day, got to the cache just ahead of other cachers. They waited at the bottom while we hunted. Thanks for a great cache. Took car mirror, flag pin & magic cards. Left St. Louis trivet and postcards.

November 21, 2001 by Ruffneck (1 found) My son, the dog and I decided to go out and look for the Cache at 1200. We found it right around 1230. The bucket is in good condition. We left nothing and we took nothing. Great drive, the weather was nice and the road condition was not as bad as I thought they would be. Right behind us was another family out looking for the cache as well. Power Lines were a little freaky though. Enjoyed it.

November 16, 2001 by drifters (413 found) Here on vacation from Orange County, California , we decided to do some geocaching this weekend. This was the first of three caches we have planned to do.Hiked thru a ravine while listening to the snap, crackle, and popping of the powerlines overhead. Lots of helicopters flying about, probably wondering what we were doing out there. Encountered lots of loose rocks on the way up to the cache, but we made it. Great place to take pictures to capture the day. We logged in the log book and took the Winnie the Pooh stickers and the toy from McDonalds. We left behind, an NTHESKN sticker, a key chain, Magic the Gathering trading cards, and a pair of wire cutters. We're off to the $5 Scarlet cache GC9BF. November 14, 2001 by 4robs (245 found) Got close but turned chicken. I got a late start and started out on foot from under the power lines, amid all the snapping and popping. That was very interesting once you got used to it. I was ready to head up the hill but realized that I would probably have to walk back in the dark and then drive out in the dark too. Decided I would try again later. It is a great location and worth the trip!

November 11, 2001 by RootbeerPhoenix (85 found) As this was my fourth cache in two days (and three failures), I was especially glad to find it! (But couldn't you have picked a spot in the shade? :) ) There's a lot of crackling from the high-voltage power lines overhead, but the spot is serene and scenic.I had to hike about half an hour after I parked the car; maybe I could have parked closer, but the roads didn't seem passable. But I passed some good-looking roads as I hiked, so maybe I could have gotten to those somehow.... Although the cache itself is in good shape, some of the writing on the outside is rubbing off. And I was glad to find a pencil alongside the logbook, because my ballpoint pen and mechanical pencil both slipped out of my pocket unnoticed somewhere along the hike. Oh, well! (It would be good for someone to leave another pencil or two in the cache, in fact; if the one that's there falls among the rocks, it may never be seen again!) None of the cache booty especially appealed to me, so I took nothing. But I left an orange rescue whistle anyway. This one is also the most distant cache I've get found, measured from my home in Portland, Oregon. Thanks!

November 7, 2001 by Filby Dude (75 found) My 3rd Cache. This one was a bit of a hike up the hillside, I guess I need more excercise. When my GPS read 0.00 I stopped and looked around, and found the bucket only 5 feet away! Left nothing and took nothing. Upon returning to my vehicle, i sat and drank some icewater and listened to the power lines pop, snap and hum. Strange! I think i will do my own Cache next week.Filby Dude

October 28, 2001 by ny74 (21 found) I found it with a little bit of difficulty by using only a map and compass. I think I messed up by shooting a bearing off the north end of Frenchman Mountain instead of the middle like I drew the line for. In any case, the find was good and the experience was entertaining. Thanks for going through the trouble of planting the cashe for us in the first place.

October 3, 2001 by B&D (1207 found) First time that we've been skunked. It was a little bizarre. We arrived in early evening in a rented 4-door sedan and heard the crackling of the power lines and saw the burned out car in the wash. As we parked near the north coordinate, we realized that a large helicopter was hovering overhead. We definitely were being watched. The chopper flew in a circle as we began to search. The loose, sharp, scree is treacherous in the fading light. During a 45-minute unsuccessful search, we were watched by two different military choppers and a small fixed wing plane that also circled overhead for a short time. We later realized that at a High-Level Alert, the military guards major transmission lines. Perhaps next time in Vegas we will try again.TRULY AN ADVENTURE. Thanks Adventure Crew.B&D

August 19, 2001 by airferret (19 found) Geocache #4....directions are a bit off, a good marker is go east on Lake Meade 8.8 miles past the Lake Meade/Nellis intersection, and turn RIGHT...easy to follow dirt road, floow to the southernmost coordinate and walk east from teh road is easiest...never found the burned out car someone earlier mentioned...good cache, took a few minutes to find it, hidden pretty well considering an orange 5 gallon bucket sounds easy to find, I was practically on top of it before I saw it...took the Cyalume stick, left a Prozac(tm) Post-It notepad and a plastic drill-bit size card...signed logbook and left...again, as somebody previously mentioned, the crackling power lines above are a bit disconcerting at first...thanks again...airferret

August 5, 2001 by 3COWS (17 found) Our First Cache !!! We attempted a difficult rating of 4/4 earlier in the day, but were unsucessful. We found this one with no problems. The left or right idea made us nervous, as my wife didn't trust the GPS. We took our girls 2 (carried) and 10 years old, plus the family dog. It was hot, and found the cache about five minutes after reaching the margin of error circle. We took the cards, and tote bag, a left 2 music CD's, hand sanitizer, music recorder, an alien, childrens stickers, cyalume light stick (12 hr red), survival tool, and various other items. Signed the log book, and climbed down after cooling off with carried-in water. Thanks, 3COWS

June 24, 2001 by ChopStix (15 found) What a great view of the whole northern end of the valley. I sat down to rest and take a new bearing and put my hand right on the lid. Great place. Park by the burned out car and you can walk right up the wash without climbing any fragile wash walls.

June 14, 2001 by GeoRanger (12 found) I was in Las Vegas for business and decided to run out and find a cache in my down time. thanks to Stork for pointing out the turn off is to the right, not the left. The drive in was fine for a 2 wheel drive vehicle but Hertz would probably not be happy if they knew I took their Mustang convertable there. It bottomed out 3 times but I crawled through the rougher spots and was fine. My GPS was losing batteries and I forgot fresh ones so i was reduced to turning it on for a little, getting my direction, hiking up a ways and repeating. Somehow I ended up quite a ways away from the final spot and had to scramble across all those loose rocks along the top. Boy was I glad when I saw the container. I was totally unprepared for the heat and my Tennis shoes were not really the best to be wearing for the climb but it was really not that bad. After all that, I had forgotten to bring anything so I didn't take anything but I did sign the log. Great location and great hiding spot. I want to come back again when I have time to really check out the area. The hissing of the Power Lines was kind of creepy. One question, was the burned out car there when you planted the cache? Thanks! bb Georangers

May 18, 2001 by stork (53 found) Related Web Page I parked too far away and did a lot of scrambling in my running shoes (bad choice of footware). I guess I should have kept driving to get closer but I figured .6 mile was close enough. I had plenty of water and was looking for a little hike. The views from the ridge above the cache are really nice and the cache was not too hard to zero in on, although without the orange top it may have been hard to spot. Traveling east from LV the turnoff is on the right, not left as stated in the directions. Good cache. Thanks.

April 1, 2001 by fang (62 found) Forgot to log this one! We headed out there on a beautiful sunny day and found the cache easily. It was a bit too cool for any lizards - bummer as I wanted to see all the lizards everyone has seenout there. I can't remember exactly what we took/left but I do know Ian took the submarine and RAchel took the flashlight and we left a screwdriver set. Nice area, thanks!

March 29, 2001 by Gumby&Pokey (1465 found) Our fourth cache of the day, and a few miles from the Diamond Back Cache where we stated our quests. The drive to the Lava Butte was nice, and this was the first time we had seen Lake Mead from somewhere besides Hoover Dam. The scramble up to the cache was a nice work out, and coming back down was a lot of fun. No snakes but a few horny toads and a bunch of lizards. We found the cache pretty easily. We took the leatherman tool and the hard rock pin and left a Swiss army knife and a blind spot mirror and a Disneyland Employee name bag. A cache well worth the time and effort. March 24, 2001 by gpscityJeff (57 found) Related Web Page We found this today about noon. It was a pretty hot trek. I DO recommend lots of water. We approached this one from the north side - up Lake Mead from Nellis. The road was a bit rough. You'd want a high center vehicle, but 4 wheel drive is not necessary. This is a really cool place with a cool cache. There's lots of good hiking and climbing places. I would warn that those black rocks are gonna attract lots of reptiles. We saw lots of lizards and 1 snake. We took the doodle pen and left a flashlight. All in all this one is what Geocaching is about - a great Outdoor Nevada experience!!!

March 10, 2001 by skywalker (13 found) Well guys, you did it again. The family and I had a nice short drive out to Lava Butte and really enjoyed the scenery. The total trip time was 45 minutes from the time we left to the time I got back down off the hill. I took the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire CD and left behind a tote bag.You know, the thought did flash through my head that I was never going to find your stash hidden in all those rocks, and had it not been so colorful, that might have been the case. I made it all the way up there in my Saturn and had no problems so just about any vehical should be able to make this trip. On the way back we decided to take the Rainbow Gardens Route which brought us back out to Vegas. The roads were nice and smooth with a few muddy spots from the last rains that we had but nothing that could slow you down. Thanks again and I look forward to your next stash. -- SkyWalker --
