A Day in the Angeles Forest - Grassy Hollow Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

BigDaddyGRC: Thanks to everyone who attended the event. Would have not been possible without you all, I would have sat there with the family and Jason with tons of burgers and dogs by our lonesome. Enjoyed everyone's company, putting this to bed. Peace Out!

It's a great time of year to hit this strength of back Country. Before winter arrives, come for a day in the Angeles Forest - Grassy Hollow Visitor Center Picnic Area. Come join us for a potluck style picnic in the woods. Event will be held on Saturday, September 25, from 11am to 1:30pm.
Bring your trekking poles, hiking boots, hat and a GPS'r!

All parking areas in this region require a "Wilderness Parking Pass". If you're in need of one, you can pick up a Day Use Pass for $5 at the ranger station, just past Wrightwood at the split of Highway 2 and Table Mountain Road (34d 22.740"N 117d 41.384"W) or here at the Grassy Hollow Visitor's Center.

GZ of the event is covered with pine trees. There are picnic tables and bbq setups. It would be great if you bring your folding chairs to chill out under the shade of the pine trees. Please list your potluck item in your post. "BigDaddyGRC" and "Scrabble Dogs" are providing the burgers and dogs, with their fixin's! Hope to see you all there. Group picture at 1:30pm!!!!

Potluck List:

Hamburgers, Hot Dogs and their fixin's!

Soft Drinks and Bottled Water!

Pasta Salad!

Veggie Tray and Dip!

Surprise!?

Idea's: I'm lost for any of them.....

Local places to explore and cache:

Grassy Hollow Visitor's Center
- Educate yourself with the local wildlife and surrounding mountains. Also learn how you can volunteer as a Fire Lookout Host.

Pacific Crest Trail - hike part of the PCT, easy portion of the trail runs through here with some amazing views (caches along the way).

Big Horn Mine - an easy 2 mile trek to this mine with a great view of Vincent's Gap Trail. Try the 1 mile hike to Vincent's Cabin for a throw back in time.

Mt. Baden Powell - Take this 2,800 foot elevation gain, 4 mile, 37 switchback hike to an elevation of 9,400. Cold fresh water at Lamel Springs, half way up, is a great stop to fill up those water bottles. You'll trek right by the 1,500 year old Wally Waldon Tree, the oldest tree in the ancient pine grove of the San Gabriel Mountains (caches along the way).

Angeles Crest Highway 2 - Go west for a scenic drive through the San Gabriel Mountains with views of the High Desert. This Highway 2 is open to Mt. Wilson to the west. Due to the 2009 Station Fire, this portion of the highway detours north to La Canada Flintridge (caches along the way).

Blue Ridge Road - 6 mile drive east from Highway 2 at Inspiration Point. This road takes you to the starting point of Pine Mountain, Dawson's Peak and the back way to Mt. Baldy (caches along the way).

This is just to name a few......
