Geocache Description:

Many sculptures adorn the Stanford campus from the classic figures of the Rodin Sculpture Garden to various futuristic and impressionistic structures. My personal favorite is in the plaza between the William Gates Computer Center and the David Packard Electrical Engineering Building where there is a unique and fascinating sculpture presentation of timekeeping in black granite. This is the starting point for this cache; Maya Lin’s “Timetable”

Maya Lin won the competition for the design for the Vietnam Memorial while she was a graduate student at Yale University in the early 1980s. Since then she has been active as an artist and architect who incorporates sculpture, landscape, and structures in her work. Timetable is one of numerous installations using water and stone, including The Women's Table at Yale and the Civil Rights Memorial at the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama. Lin's other important projects are The Wave Field at the University of Michigan College of Engineering and Groundswell at the Wexner Center for the Arts at Ohio State University. She is the subject of the film, Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision, which first appeared on PBS in 1996

Information about the Vietnam Memorial and other works by Maya Lin can be found at: (visit link)

The press release for the dedication of the Timetable can be seen at: (visit link)

The actual cache is NOT located at the “Timetable.” After enjoying and contemplating the sculpture, determine the coordinates of the cache from the sculpture and the associated information plaque.

The CACHE is located at: N 37d 25.ABC, W 122d 10.CCD

A = two times the number of moving elements of this sculpture (excluding water)

B = the number of “times” that encircle the outer ring of the sculpture

C = the second digit in the number under the word Standard in the outer ring

D = one less than the product of the two decimal digits of the number associated with the person who made the gift

On your way to the cache, you'll likely pass “Stanford Palos Altos” at N 37d 25.775, W 122d 10.261. Be sure to read the plaque and enjoy the serenity of the place.

PARKING at Stanford can be a problem if you don’t have an appropriate permit. However, there is nearby short-term parking at N 37d 25.965, W 122d 10.210. Between the hours of 8am and 4pm on Monday through Friday, the charge is $1.50/hour. Otherwise, parking is free.
