Geocache Description:

2.5 Terrain Rating due to distance.

This cache is located along the Butler-Freeport Trail which is a “Rails to Trails” project. The cache is a small pill bottle with a log sheet and two small pencils. You may wish to bring your own pencil along just in case. The hike or bicycle ride in to the cache will be in the neighborhood of three miles so be forewarned. This is not a park and grab. However, the trail consists of crushed limestone and is essentially level.

While on the trail look for the remains of an old brickyard ¾ mile or so in from the parking lot. It will be at the bottom of the hill a hundred feet or so from the trail. There are also several cut stone culverts that were built by the railroad to channel the various springs and small streams under the roadbed. Also there is a good chance that you will see some wildlife while looking for the cache. I saw several wild turkeys and heard some owls hooting one evening while on the trail.

There is a parking lot next to the trail in Laneville which is across Buffalo Creek from Freeport. The bridge from Freeport is one way out of town. The coordinates for parking are N 41 40.868 W 079 41.395. When looking at Mapquest one might be tempted to just drop over the ridge to the cache, but be warned that a lot of the hillside next to the trail is posted and is quite steep in places. So!!! Don’t go there.

Since the trail is for the most part on the North side of a steep hillside, satellite reception is not the best. If your coordinates vary significantly from those listed, please post your coordinates with your log. I scoped out and waypointed the location one day and went back another to place the cache and was being directed out into Buffalo Creek. The cache is not there. There will be no reason to go over the creek bank to find the cache. I attempted to obtain better coordinates while placing the cache and the GPSr just would not settle down.

Good luck and enjoy a relaxing hike along a beautiful and scenic trail.
