A meta' della Val de Mesdi - In the middle of the Mesdi Valley - In der Mitte des Mittagstales (Val de Mesdi)

As this is a difficult cache I would like to add a transation in German, for more conveninence for the German speaking geocachers. If anyone is able to translate the listing in German I will be happy to add it. Just send a message to me with he translation.

Questo e' un cache difficile, posizionato in una valle stupefacente e solitaria.
Putroppo durante la gita la memory card della fotocamera ha smesso di funzionare e quindi ho poche foto, il che rende piu' difficile trovare il cache.
Provero' quindi a dare una descrizione precisa del luogo.
La Val de Mesdi e' un vallone imponente e selvaggio, con torri e pareti che si ergono ai lati (il che rende anche un po' difficile la ricezione dei GPS).
Sono possibili tre diversi accessi al cache:
1) Dal Rif. Boe': un sentiero ripido [651]con funi di appoggio scende nella valle; poi una volta in fondo valle il sentiero diventa normale; questo e' l' accesso meno faticoso ma piu' pericoloso(circa 1 ora dal Rif. Boe' al cache, ma considerate almeno un altra ora dall'arrivo della funivia del Sas Pordoi al Rif. Boe', sentiero [627]) . La parte alta del sentiero della Val de Mesdi' richiede esperienza di montagna e puo' essere franoso (cartello al Rif. Boe' : sentiero per esperti - nur fur gebaude).
2) Da Colfosco: sempre con il sentiero [651] in circa 2-3 ore (a seconda della vostra velocita'). Opzione piu' faticosa, tutta in salita, ma meno pericolosa.
3) Dal Rif. Cavazza-Pisciadu': tramite il sentiero [676] ci si immette nella Val de Mesdi' che occorre poi risalire, con il sentiero [651], per circa mezz'ora. In totale circa 1 ora e 30 min dal Rif. Cavazza-Pisciadu. Occorre tener presente che dal Passo Gardena occorre circa 1 ora e 30 min per raggiungere il Rif. Cavazza-Pisciadu' lungo il sentiero [666], Alta Via delle Dolomiti n. 2.
La discesa dal Rif. Cavazza-Pisciadu' e' per esperti.
Questo accesso al cache in definitiva non offre vantaggi rispetto alle opzioni 1 e 2 (e' diffile come l'opzione 1 e faticoso come l'opzione 2), tuttavia e' un alternativa interessante, magari per una traversata completa del Gruppo del Sella.
Il cache si trova a circa 2400 m di quota tra le pareti del Sasc del Mezdi e del Sasc dles Nu dove la valle si allarga un po' (vedere foto). In quel tratto c'e' un enorme frana con enormi blocchi. Il cache e' in una fessura di uno dei blocchi, circa 10 metri a destra del sentiero (scendendo).
Il blocco del cache e' caratteristico: e' uno dei 2-3 piu' grossi (almeno 5x5x5 metri), quasi perfettamente squadrato, con uno spigolo netto verso nord ed una parte superiore rettangolare quasi piana. Sembra intagliato ad hoc.
Sullo spigolo Nord del blocco c'e' una fessura orizzontale, regolare, a circa 1.5 m di altezza dal terreno, profonda circa 60 cm. Il cache e' in quella fessura, nascosto dietro a due sassi di protezione in modo che non sia visibile.
Provenendo dal fondo valle, quindi da circa Nord, la fessura del cache e' chiaramente visibile (ho comuque costruito un picco ometto segnavia in corrispondenza).
Provenendo dall' alto della valle, quindi circa da Sud, occorre cercare il blocco caratteristico del cache, quello con la parte alta piatta (la fessura del cache e' visibile solo da Nord).
Il cache e' un contenitore di plastica trasparente circa 10x10x5 cm e contiene piccoli oggetti.
Ricordo ancora che l' approccio al cache dal Rif. Boe' o dal Rif. Cavazza-Pisciadu' e' per esperti.
Da ultimo, per aumentare la difficolta', ho notato che nel vallone, date le imponenti pareti circostanti, il GPS ha una ricezione limitata (nel mio caso solo 3 stelliti visibili EPE = Estimated Precision Error 75 metri!).
Dato che la Val de Mezdi viene percorsa anche in inverno in discesa con gli sci e' possibile accedere al cache in ogni stagione.

This is a difficult cache, in a solitary and astonishing valley.
Unfortunately during a trip the memory card of my camera has stopped to work and therefore I have only one photo, so is more difficult to find the cache. I will try to write therefore a precise description of the cache location.
The Val de Mesdi' is an imposing and wild valley, with towers and walls on both sides (that adds also a little difficult reception of the GPS).
Three differents accesses to the cache are possible:
1) From the Rif. Boe': a steep path [651] with metallic support ropes comes down; then once in bottom of the valley the path becomes easy; this is a dangerous but less laborious access (approximately 1 hour from the Rif. Boe' to the cache, but consider at least an other hour from the arrival of the aerial tramway of the Sas Pordoi to the Rif. Boe', path [627]). The high part of the path of the Val de Mesdi demands mountain experience and can be dangerous for falling rocks (at the Rif. Boe': path for experts - nur fur gebaude) ans snow.
2) From Colfosco: always with the path [651] in approximately 2-3 hours (up to your speed). Laborious, all uphill, but less dangerous.
3) From the Rif. Cavazza-Pisciadu': through the path [676] to Val de Mesdi; than up valley with the path [651], for approximately half hour. In total approximately 1 hour and 30 min from the Rif. Cavazza-Pisciadu. From the Gardena Pass it is necessary approximately 1 hour and 30 min in order to reach the Rif. Long Cavazza-Pisciadu' with the path [666], High Via of the Dolomiti n. 2.
The path from the Rif. Cavazza-Pisciadu' to the Mesdi valley is steep and for experts.
This access to the cache after all does not offer any advantages respect to the options 1 and 2 (is difficult as 1 and laborious as 2), however it's an interesting alternative.
The cache it is positioned at about 2400 m of elevation between the walls of the "Sasc Mezdi" and of the 'Sasc dles Nu". There is an landslide with enormous blocks. The cache is positioned in a crack of one of the blocks, approximately 10 meters to the right of the main path (coming downhill the path).
The block of the cache is characteristic: it's one of the the 2-3 largest (at least 5x5x5 meters), nearly perfectly squared, with one edge clearly pointing towards north and nearly a flat rectangular top. It seems carved ad hoc as landmark.
On the northern edge of the block there is an horizontal, regular crack, at approximately 1.5 m of height from the bottom, approximately 60 cm deep. The cache is in that fissure, hidden behind two stones.
Coming from the bottom of the valley, therefore approximately from North, the fissure of the cache is clearly visible.
Coming from the top of the valley, therefore approximately from South, search for the characteristic block of the cache, that one with the flat top (the fissure of the cache is visible later, only from the North side).
The cache is a small transparent plastic container with small items.
Please note: the approaches to the cache from the Rif. Boe' or from the Rif. Cavazza-Pisciadu' is for experts.
Last, I have noticed that in the valley, due to the imposing surrounding walls, the GPS have limited reception (in my case 3 satellites visible EPE = Estimated Precision Error 75 meters!).
Since the Val de Mesdi can be visited also in winter with the skis, it's possible to reach the cache in any season.

Dies ist ein schwieriger Cache in einem einsamen und ueberwaeltigenden Tal.
Ungluecklicherweise ging waehrend der Tour die Speicherkarte meiner Kamera kaputt
und daher habe ich nur ein Bild und es ist somit schwieriger, den Cache zu finden.
Deshalb werde ich versuchen, die Position des Caches genau zu beschreiben.
Das Mittagstal (Val de Mesdi) ist ein imposantes und wildes Tal mit Tuermen und
Waenden auf beiden Seiten (was den GPS-Empfang schwierig macht).
Drei verschiedene Zugaenge zum Cache sind moeglich:
1) Von der Bamberger Huette (Rif. Boé): Ein steiler Pfad (651) teilweise gesichert
mit Stahlseilen fuehrt hinab. Wenn man im Tal ist, wird der Weg einfacher.
Dies ist ein gefaehrlicher aber weniger anstrengender Zugang (etwa 1 Stunde von
der Bamberger Huette zum Cache, dazu muss man noch mindestens eine Stunde von
der Bergstation der Seilbahn am Sas de Pordoi zur Bamberger Huette rechnen, Weg 627).
Der obere Teil des Weges ins Mittagstal erfordert Bergerfahrung und kann wegen
Steinschlag gefaehrlich sein (Schild an der Bambereger Huette: "Nur fuer Geuebte!").
2) Von Kolfuschg (Colfosco): Immer auf dem Weg 651 in etwa 2 bis 3 Stunden
(je nach Gehgeschwindigkeit).
Anstrengend, immer bergauf, aber weniger gefaehrlich.
Man kann auch vom Parkplatz unterhalb des Groedner Joches (Passo Gardena)
in halber Hoehe unterhalb der Waende bis zum Weg 651 gehen und spart sich dadurch
den sehr steilen unteren Teil.
3) Von der Pisciaduseehuette (Rif. Cavazza-Pisciadu): ueber den Weg 676 ins Mittagstal
und dann das Tal etwa eine halbe Stunde aufwaerts (Weg 651). Insgeamt ca. 1,5 Stunden
von der Pisciaduseehuette.
Vom Groedner Joch (Passo Gardena) muss man nochmal etwa 1,5 Stunden auf dem Weg 666
(Dolomiten Hoehenweg Nr.2) bis zur Pisciaduseehuette rechnen.
Der Weg von der Pisciaduseehuette ins Mittagstal ist nur fuer Geuebte.
Dieser Zugang zum Cache bringt keinerlei Vorteile gegenueber Option 1 oder 2
(er ist schwierig wie 1 und anstrengend wie 2), aber es ist eine interessante Alternative.
Der cache liegt in etwa 2400m Hoehe zwischen den Waenden des "Sas de Mezdi" und des
"Sas dles Nu". Dort gab es einen gewaltigen Felssturz und es liegen daher enorme
Felsbloecke herum. Der Cache liegt in einer schmalen Spalte in einem der Bloecke
ca. 10m rechts des Weges (wenn man talabwaerts geht).
Dieser Block ist charakteristisch: es ist einer der zwei bis drei groessten Bloecke
(mindestens 5x5x5 Meter) und nahezu ein perfekter Wuerfel. Eine der Kanten weist genau
nach Norden und die Oberseite ist eben und rechteckig. Er sieht aus wie vom Menschen
geformt.
An seiner Nordkante hat der Block einen waagerechten regelmaessigen Spalt, etwa 1,5m
ueber dem Boden und ca. 60cm tief. In diesem Riss ist der Cache versteckt hinter zwei
Steinen.
Kommt man das Tal hinauf, also in etwa aus Norden, ist der Riss, in dem der Cache liegt,
deutlich zu erkennen.
Kommt man das Tal abwaerts, also in etwa aus Sueden, muss man nach dem charakteristischen
Block mit der ebenen Oberseite Ausschau halten (das Versteck des Caches ist erst
spaeter aus noerdlicher Richtung zu sehen).
Der Cache selbst ist eine kleine durchsichtige Plastikdose mit kleinen Gegenstaenden.
Nochmal zur Erinnerung: Die Zugaenge von der Bamberger Huette und
von der Pisciaduseehuette sind nur fuer Geuebte!
Ich habe bemerkt, dass der GPS-Empfang im Tal wegen der hohen umgebenden Waende
nur sehr begrenzt ist (in meinem Fall drei Satelliten sichtbar,
EPE=Estimated Precision Error 75m!).
Da das Mittagstal auch im Winter mit Skiern besucht werden kann, ist es moeglich,
den Cache zu allen Jahreszeiten zu finden.
