Geocache Description:

Beautiful Viewpoint, steep climb, great picnic spot.

This is probably the best view point in SW Washington. On the map it is called Lookout Mountain and it used to have a fire tower on it. Go to this cache on a clear day and you can see Mt. St Helens, Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood, Mt Jefferson and The Sisters. Rainier appears very bold next to Helens. Years ago, I buried my dog up here, best dog I ever had. She loved it up here so here she remains. Listen carefully and you may hear some barking.

I will list two ways to get to the cache. The first way is a little shorter but the second way is a little nicer:

The Shorter Route
Make your way past Multon Falls to Sunset Falls Campground. There is good swimming and camping here. Turn right through the camping area at sunset falls and cross a bridge, then turn left onto the forest road. Follow this road a long way until you get to N45.48.143 W122.06.833. This is the final turn off to the cache. The idea when taking this route is to stay on the main road!! Do not make an sharp turns downward or any steep turns upward. Stay on the main road. It is narrow and sometimes bumpy with potholes, rocks, and occasional water dam humps. Most of the road is OK but when itis bad it is bad. Pickups and SUV's will have no problems. Low boy sedans are another story.

The Nicer Route
Drive out to sunset falls and continue straight on the main road, do not turn right and do not cross the bridge. The road turns to "gravel" after the falls. Continue a long way following the river. Do not take any of the roads that branch off to the left. Stay on the main road as it turns uphill leaving the river. Continue uphill until you get to N45.50.585 W122.08.548. This is a wide hairpin turn to the right and also an intersection. Follow the road that is to the RIGHT. If you miss this, you are lost for sure. Keep following the main road until you get to "Cougar Rock" at N45.50.176 W122.05.339. There is an intersection there...go RIGHT. This is the final leg of your journery. You will drive right by "Bigfoot" cache so plan on stopping to find it too. Do not turn off of this road continue straight when it merges with another road until you get to the final turn that goes up hill to the cache. N45.48.143 W122.06.833 It is a left, uphill turn and there is a gate there.

The final road to the top is 1.04 miles uphill all the way. There is NO turn around until you get to the top. The road is steep and rocky and bumpy. I recommend taking a 4 wheel drive vehicle, but I once made it up there in my Chevy Suburban with 2 wheel drive. Good ground clearance is the key. The climb is from 3440 to 4206 elevation. Due to the elevation, this cache may be blocked by snow at times. About 1/8 mile S of the turn off, there is a large flat area to camp just off the main road. There are nice fire rings there and even a water tank for animals with fresh clean water....drink at your own risk.

It looks like a long way to this cache, but it is actually only 34 driving miles from the center of Battle Ground and well worth the trip. Only 20 miles if you are a Crow. Even so, it will take you most of a day due to the rough roads. There are some other caches you can find along the way. Little Baldy is great if you take the Short Route. We use the short route going up and the long route coming home.
