THIS CACHE IS NOT AT THE ABOVE COORDINATES: On the morning of January 29th, 2009, Carson City was struck by 3 earthquakes. Most of you never even knew about it as they were too small to be felt. Regardless of that, they still happened. Once they were verified by a seismologist, I plotted the epicenters on a topo map. These 3 epicenters were all in the SE part of Carson City.
By connecting the 3 epicenters, you can form a scalene triangle, so instead of hiding a cache at all 3 locations(one of which was on prison property), I decided to hide the cache at the Centroid of the Triangle. Here are the coordinates of the 3 epicenters, and from there you will be able to calculate the Centroid. Earthquake #A was a 1.6 magnitude, and the weakest. It was located at N 39 06.120 W 119 44.040. Earthquake #B was 1.8 magnitude and it was located at N 39 06.660 W 119 44.220. Earthquake #C was the strongest at 2.1 magnitude and it was located at N 39 06.540 W 119 44.040. The difficulty rating is based on whether or not you have a map with coordinates to be able to plot the 3 epicenters. A topo map on a computer is the easiest way to do all the plotting. To start finding the Centroid, you first need to measure the length of each side of the Triangle. Since a 1 foot discrepancy from my measurements compared to somebody else can make a big difference, here is some assistance to get started. You will only need to be within 100ft as I'll give you the last 2 digits of each measurement. From Quake A to Quake B, it is _ _ 00ft. From Quake B to Quake C, it is _ _ 20ft. From Quake C to Quake A, it is _ _ 50ft. From there, you need to figure out the rest. Also, the ammo can being used for this hide was won by me, at the dinner for the GBES 2008 Navigational Rally (Yes, I am finally using it). In it, I have placed the movie "10.5 Apocalypse"(an earthquake movie, of course), tape measure, glow sticks, water proof match container, Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader card game, and a mini set of screw drivers.

You can check your answers for this puzzle on Geochecker.com.

Cached with Team Alamogul, on our way to an unevent and the Diabolical night cache. TFTPC!! The only centroid I know is my geocaching centroid near Area 51, Nevada.

I must admit that I screwed up the solution as I first foung the point that was equidistant from each of the epicenters, but I was soon set straight and got a close-enough solution. Stopped by this evening with bthomas for the find, we also met the cache owner at the un-event this evening. Thanks for the fun

Google Earth plotted the required points to within 25 feet. The surroundings look somewhat arid!

Seventh of seven finds on a blustery day. You do not need mapsource or any software to solve the math on this one, simply geometric reasoning and some arithmetic will provide the answer. Our coordinates were within 17 feet so that is spot on. TFTC
