Geocache Description:

This is a historical tour around Anacortes implementied within a Multi-cache. There is no difficult terrain encountered during any part of the tour. There is a signifigant amount of walking involved between the first three legs of the cache, so A car or bike may be helpful. Stealth may be required to retrieve the cache and log the find. The tide may be an issue unless you don't mind getting the feet a little wet. Bring Your Own Pen.

Anacortes est. 1891

The First Stop on this history walk is at the Anacortes History Museum. This building served as the Anacortes Public Library beginning in 1909. The building was commissioned by the Carnegie Corporation in 1911. It began its tenure as the Museum in 1968. Please stop in for a visit before or after your caching for more details on the history of this 'Magic City'.

A = How many fountain 'Heads' are located on the monument located at the initial coordinates of this cache?
B = What is the last digit of the year stated on either of the plaques at the base of the monument?
Multiply A X 10 and add the result to the last two digits of the N coordinate for the Second Stop:
48 30.939N
Multiply B X 10 and add the result to the last two digits of the W coordinate for the Second Stop:
122 36.528W

The Second Stop is a large historical object. It arrived in its current location after servicing various areas of the Puget Sound from 1929 to 1981. This is not necessarly a part of Anacortes Histrory, but I felt it still deserved a spot on the tour due to its important role in the county. Work is nearly completed on an improvement to the site which will greatly enhance your visit.

C = How Many Rudders are in place on the vessle?
D = How many letters does the name of the vessel consist of?
Multiply A x 10 and add the result to the last two digits of the N coordinate for the Third Stop:
48 31.099N
Multiply C x 10 and add the result to the last two digits of the W coordinate for the Third Stop:
122 36.706W

The Third Stop is the John Platt building 1890. This was the first brick building in Anacortes AND all of Skagit county. This was also the site of the first Bank in Anacortes and a suicide in the vault. I noticed the word BANK in the tile under the doormat.
Maybe its time to take a break and grab a frosty beverage? I have a feeling there are a few excellent places nearby.

E = How many letters are in the name of the business in the front of the building?
Multiply D x 10 and add the result to the last three digits of the N coordinate for the Fourth Stop:
48 31.139N
Multiply E x 10 and add the result to the last three digits of the W coordinate for the Fourth Stop:
122 36.652W

The Fourth Stop was originally known as 'The Anchorage' during the 1890's. It was a pool hall and shooting gallery. What Fun! It was converted to the current business in 1913. Its the oldest business of its type on the entire west coast!

F = What is the last digit of the Building address?
Multiply F x 10 and add the result to the last two digits of the N coordinate for the Fifth Stop:
48 31.274N
Multiply B X 10 and add the result to the last two digits of the W coordinate for the Fifth Stop:
122 36.734W

The Fifth Stop was once the main entry point for early visitors to Anacortes. That's right, Commercial Ave once flowed the other direction through town!
You are here to see the tow bit from the tug Challenge, 1890 - 1981. There is a slight possiblilty that port activies will prevent you from getting right up to this tow bit and sniffing it, but you should be able to see it through the fence.

G = What is the last digit of the year that the Port of Anacortes was established?
Multiply G x 10 and add the result to the last three digits of the N coordinate for the FINAL Stop:
48 31.240N
The W coordinate will be derived with a slightly different method. This is to make sure nobody skips to the last stop of the tour thereby cheating themselves of the historical experience!
122 3G.7D0

You have arrived, now start hunting for the cache much like the pioneers of Anacortes were hunting for new lives. I hope you have enjoyed the brief historical tour. If there is enough interest in this cache, I will create a second historical tour based on some of the other buildings in town.

All this for a micro? and I hate math-multi's! -
The final hide location wouldn't support more than a micro which is a shame because I am not extremely fond of them myself.
I usually can't stand these math-multi caches, but I could'nt think of another way to get people from place to place. I recently read an article on the popularity of GPSr based tourism in Asia and I just knew we could do it right here for free! I could have easilly made this a far more extensive tour, but I thought it best to keep it sane to start out.... but who knows what the future will hold!
