Geocache Description:

A small cache within Birkenhead Park, Merseyside. The paths to the cache are well paved but the last section, while short, will be on grass or mud, depending on weather. You are allowed to drive on all roads around the edge of the park, and may stop and park at the side of the road. You will need to go through a gate or climb over a fence. There is a nice cafe and exhibition centre at the Birkenhead end of the park.

Birkenhead Park opened on the 5th of April 1847 and was the first publicly funded park in Britain. The park's design has inspired many and Central Park in New York is known to have taken certain features from the park. The park was used heavily in the World War II, not only for supplies (fences removed for metal, statues melted), but as a centre for air-raid bunkers and anti-aircraft defences. The park had several anti-aircraft guns and two anti-aircraft balloons, the idea being that bombers would swoop low down to attack and get caught in the metal chains.

Recently park recently recieved an £11.5 million pound renovation including: new paths, new trees, cleaning of the park's two lakes and the addition of a café/exhibition centre. Two schools sit on the park: Birkenhead Park Highschool and the Wirral Hospitals School & Home Education Service's Joseph Paxton Campus. All outer roads in the park may be used by motor vehicles, and also make excellent cycling surfaces. The path is mostly undisrupted except for a through road going right through the heart of the park. Several paths and fields are placed in the centre of the park, leading off from the outer ring road.

The cache is hidden near one of the park's two ponds, and is near of the park's more famous and more picturesque landmarks: the swiss bridge (you will see it) and the boathouse. Make sure to go and have a look.

This is my first cache and was placed in cooperation with my Mother! If anyone has any suggestions, hints or comments let me know. There are quite a lot of small goodies in this cache, but nothing too valuable.
